my betta boy Fishywish has found possibly the lasyist way to make a bubblenest last.
i have him in a fish r fun hex tank, the kind where the filter is above the tank on a shelf, i fill the water to just the btoom of the shelf, its away from the slight current from the filter run off and this is where he builds his nest, it nearly covers half the top of the tank!

i wish i could post a pic but my camera is playing up and i havent even been able to put a pic of him up at all :-(

just thought id share

xXx

none of my males ever want to build a nest, what can i do to make him build one. he's in a 10-gallon breeding tank with a female that is in a floater in the tank. He's got everything he needs, but there is no nest! I have tried with all three of my males, but no luck haha

try removing the filter and shutting the lights off. then put half a styrofoam cup on top the water, it workes every time.

Every male we have makes a bubblenest. Some are bigger than others, but they all make one the day after a water change. Maybe it has something to do with their food? I remember reading somewhere that certain foods, like black worms, encourage nest building. All of our bettas get 1 black worm every 3 days, but the breeders get one daily. We also feed them pellets (daily), freezedried bloodworms (once per week), and a few brine shrimp per day. None of our bettas will eat the flake food, and 2 won't eat freezedried bloodworms. Finicky fishies! LOL

what did you conditio them on and how long?

EDIT. sorry bad spelling lol

thanks guys for your replies :)

I already have a styrofoam cup in there and the filter is gone and the lights are off. So it is just him, a female (in a floating case) and the styrofoam cups, a heater, and some plants (as a retreat for the female if she jumps in).

All of my males build bubble nests in another tank i have though. Whenever i put them in there, they build one immediately, but it isnt the breeding tank so i try to put them back in the breeding tank and they wont build one.

Lol im so confused and i have been trying for about 3 weeks now. Some of the males just blow bubbles all over the tank in random spots, so that makes me realy mad haha.

I read somewhere that if you are trying to breed a male who won't build a nest, but you have other males who have nests, sometimes you can remove their bubble nests (very carefully) and add them to the breeding tank and the male you want to breed will then add to the nest. Might be worth trying.

when i spawn i dont let the male and female see eachother until the day of the spawn for two reasons,

1) the female might get stressed and not want to breed because of the constant flaring from the male
and
2) sometimes the male will be too occupied with the female to make a nest, it sound stupid but it happens. he just swimms around her flaring and doesnt want to make the nest.

Mine likes to inspect every bubble in his tank. If I turn the air up, bubbles begin to form out the air tube. He see's movement and thinks its his nest. Lazy bum!!! Here's mine guarding it.

This could be the latest and greatest invention for a lazy betta. The "Tetra Betta Bubblenester 550"

good clean water changes, again you might want to try taking the female out.

thank you afishdude i took the female out now and i gave him a nice clean water change just now. I guess i just have to wait and see if he will build one. I have bred bettas MANY times but i have never come across this problem lol. The male i used to use for breeding died not too long ago and ever since then every male i buy just isnt working with me haha
