In hindsight, I really wished I'd ended his misery right then and there instead of putting him through 2 weeks of hell. He didn't deserve to go out like that. No living creature does.
If eventually you decide to send him on his way, put him in a plastic container with some water and a tight lid. Add some clove oil to put him into a painless sleep, then overdose to peacefully send him away.
If you're squeamish, cover the tub with a towel so you don't see him end. But I would watch him, and say my final goodbye.
Fish aren't dead until 15 minutes after the last gill movement. So keep him in there for at least 30 minutes.
Then respectfully bury him.
It's tough to hold or watch a pet go, I held my beloved cockatiel Maxie in my hands as she took her last breath and her heart stopped a few seconds later. To see the light go out is terrible, but at least I was there to comfort her on her way out.
I'm sorry about Oscar. He will never be replaced.
