The Journal Of A Marine Beginner

ive always wondered that too, mainly i think they look stuck but somehow get out of it ... ive not seen one go for a new shell yet though if its been what i thought was completly stuck !!!

are you using your aqua reminder for your thermoter of have you got one in the tank aswell?

Hi... I use that for portable testing and have a strip thermometer on the back of the tank, strip reads 25C - probe reads 27C. Do you know much of their accuracy?

Stick on strip thermometers are crap as they measure in between the tank temp and the outside temp

the sticker is crap but so is the digi thermometer i had one exactly the same the-aqua minder and it was 4.f out so every time i paniced i thought it was 83/84 it was really 79/80 and it swings i advise buying just a normal non-mercury thermoter as they read perfectly i had 4 and they all match my chiller also

whats wrong with 83/84?, and best themometers are the ones that go inside the glass ones

Small update...

Heading over to the LFS this afternoon, looking to pick some shrimps and more hermit crabs (or maybe a couple of clowns) and also going to get a glss thermometer - will have to find a place to hide it in the tank, hate the look of stuff in a tank

The brown diatomacious algae has subsided, now I'm seeing some green algae appearing on the glass - I'm keeping to the 10hr photo period. There is some green plants growing on the LR, not algae but a good plant (cannot remember the name)

The coral is doing fine, been dosing it daily with Marine Snow, it likes feeding time! The tentacles (for want of a better word) are growing at an amazing rate!

The crabs have just disappeared, sometimes they make a small guest appearance but that's about it!

Today I fitted 10LEDs into the back of the tank, the coral will appreciate it and so will the missus... you see the coral shrivels up when its dark and she hates the look of it

So coral and missus happy and keeping marine is so much easier than keeping my high-tec planted... result! :good:

Bought a TMC precision today, glad I did! you are right fella, the probe is crap.... Probe says 27.7C, TMC precision is 24.4C so I'm slowly rising the temp up to a target 25.5C

Thanks for the heads up

Today I walked away from the LFS with 2 T5 reflectors (badly needed!!), 2 x Clown fish (I know I know, my son loves Nemo), Salifert Nitrate and PH, TMC Precision internal thermometer, some Hiakri & frozen foods and 3 orange legged hermits (which I beleive are reef friendly, please confirm?)

The clowns & crabs are now in after acclimatising them for about 40mins

Clowns and crabs are just that, nothing intersting but will get a photo tonight of the moonlights in action!

Glad to hear you are enjoying the SW experience, Sophos. I am thinking about setting up a nano reef for a friend and am reading this journal with interest. :good:

I have absolutely tons of reading to do, though.

Dave.

Hi Dave, hope all is well! Glad its adding some value, just my ramblings really but I'm loving marine much more!

First thing, no photo but the LED's looked excellent, will get a pic tonight. Today I'm going to give the tank a 10% water change, some recommend that the water should be turned over and heated for a min of 24hrs, I'm going to be doing it for about 5 (salt water in a bucket with heater and 300pa eheim pump). Would be interested in the science of the 24hr thing so would be glad for someone to post up? I have to make my own salt water today so I'm making 25ltrs of RODI water and using TAP pro-reef salt - now I don't know what I'm doing here but I think it goes something like add some salt, test salinity, add some more salt, test again and so on, will measure how much this time so next I can just add it without all the faffing about

Now I have a reliable thermometer I'm also working on the extraction timings, its a hot day and the lights have been on for 5hrs, temp went up to 26.5 so I'm putting the fan on for an hour an measuring the difference, this way I can maintain a balance around 26-26.5C

Clowns look great and are happy, crabs have all disappeared. Noticed I'm now getting some fine green algae on the front glass, hope this is not the dreaded GDA (was bad with my tropical!)... Fingers crossed it passes! :shout:

No photo, I forgot!

I have the timings for evaporative cooling now, the fan will kick in after 4hrs and will come on for 30mins of each hour to the end of the photoperiod - this should maintain around 26C which will be good, the only downside is the increase consumption of RODI water but its not a problem if you make your own.

I flooded the kitchen floor for the second time, glad the missus understands...

Ok, so no picture right? Right! erm slowly I'm running out of excuses... So last night I mixed my first batch of salt, all went well with no problems at all.... erm OK, check out this link to find out the real story

In the past week, 3 timers have failed - cheap rubbish from BnQ so I have bought some decent electronic timers rather than the analogue poop. As a result I managed to leave the extremely complicated evaporative cooling system running over night - temp this morning of 24C - the clowns had buried themselves in the sand in a desperate bid to keep warm. Realised the heater was set on 24 instead of 25.5C. I'm sure the temperature fluctuates more than that in the wild.

I also remembered at 6:30 this morning that I had left the RODI unit on flush all night so I'm looking forward to the water bill this month!

When I was breaking the icicles of the tank this morning, I noticed a snail - how did this fella arrive I asked? Its small, black and white, looks like a tropical snail. Will try and get a picture of it tonight

Apart from the minor mishaps, things are looking good - have decided to only dose marine snow once every 2 days as I believe the clown food should give the leather mushroom some goodies... Oh and its growing too, and growing quick... its trying to take over the whole tank...

I'd go get yourself a garden hose timer for the RO unit. Lets me just turn it on for a couple hours and walk away :D
