I have 8 cories in a tank that is always 80°-81° and currently cannot be lowered. My heater (about 4 months old) is on its lowest setting so my question is should I replace the heater or are the cories okay at this temp? They do appear energetic and typically happy/silly.

It's a Hydor 300w unit in a 75 gallon

depends on which type of cory and if they grew up in hot water i think

They’re bronze cories. Presumably native to Columbia, Argentina, Venezuela?

i have those too. my temperature is 71-74 ( the far end of the tank is 71)
they like the warmer side of the tank...

Can you turn the heater off for a few months?
They can tolerate warm water for a period of time but do better if given a cooler period.

Well the ambient temperature in the house is about 68° dropping at night to around 60° and I have angelfish and yoyo loaches in there too. I’m leaning toward buying another heater that I can actually regulate.

Yes.. get a new heater. Your heater appears to be defective. If your heater sticks in the on position, you could cook your fish. Your heater may be covered by a warranty. Check the manual that came with your heater.

It has a variable temp control knob, complete with markings to dial in the exact temp. But… on its lowest setting it’s 80° all day long. I just bought a new heater. 👍

I recommend replacing it. Best temp would be 76-77 degrees.
