The Continuing Adventures Of Skifletch

Thanks guys, we all love compliments :) The palythoa are awesome aren't they? I can't wait till my rainbow acan grows itself out. Just one head and not in the pic... yet ;)

Seffie, yes the euphyllia are certainly close to one another and I do not have any aggression between them. I do however have aggression issues with the green-tipped frogspawn with brown tentacles irritating some of the paly's behind it, not enough to kill, but they're definitely at a "stalemate". I have also had one major issue with the center BIG torch stinging the purple/teal blastomussa at the bottom of that rock stack to the torches left. The torch whacked 2-3 heads on the blasto before I coudl move it. Burned it straight to the skeleton. Ouch

Also, my only coral-based trouble has been with the pearl bubble. Ever since I cooked it last year, it never recovered. It's finally being over-run by palythoa as you can see on the bottom right :(.

Goin to a frag-swap this weekend and I'll probably trim some Euphyllia, Palys, and perhaps do some re-arranging. We'll see :)

Well folks, not much new to report, more of a "steady as she goes" . Thought I'd post a quick FTS though to show the tank maturing a bunch. The torches, frogspawns, and elegance are getting massive now...

Beautiful tank, you have some stunning corals in there, isnt it strange in a reef tank how your eyes are drawn to the corals first before the fish?

that true, never thought of that before

lovely tank mate, really awesome!

Stunning Ski.

Only problems I had was my pearl bubble being too close to the grren tipped brown polyped frogspawn. Had to move the bubble to allow the frogspawn to expand properly again. Is doing so a treat now.

Stunning FTS :D

so what are looking for a the frag swap??...come on there's always something we can find to add right?!?!

Bout the only thing I'd consider purchasing at this point coral-wise would be a watermelon echinophyllia.

And thanks for all the compliments guys. Finally startin to fill up the whole frame with corals :D

Tanks looking great Ski B-), the 3 monthly(think thats what you said you do) water changes working out really well by the looks of things.

Johnny

Thanks Johnny :)

And yes, I do only do a waterchange every 3 months. It's a BIG one (45g on a 70g water volume) but just one.

Gawd working on a principle of a 50% water change three monthly ( I know you did more before anyone complains about my maths :fun: ), I would have to do at least a 180 litre change - think I am going to do monthly, what % would you recommend ?

I would say it depends on what your water tells you....lol yea I know a generic answer :) Could start w/25-35% a month and see how your water readings turn out. I can't remember if you dose yet or not or what corals you may have but depending on their uptake you could be dosing a 2 part or something. Anyways, my guess...don't know if I'm right or wrong, but I think it sounds good

Agree with KJ. Really the only reason I do waterchanges Seffie is to remove dissolved organics, bromide, sulphate, or alleopathic chemicals that build up in the water column that I can neither test for nor remove otherwise. The only other reason i waterchange is to replace trace elements and get my sg back down. When I do my big change I do it with 1.025sg water and over the course of the 3 months with the adding of my calc/alk/mg additives my sg will drift up to around 1.026-1.027. Over time adding NaCO3(2) and CaCl every day increases salinity... hence the waterchange to bring it back down. Also my additives lead to a SLIGHT buildup of sulphate (mag sulphate) and bromide (trace element in my mag and calc suppliments) which although nobody seems to be able to prove are bad, they are not present in the natural reef, so I figure it best to remove them.

If I used something like a calcium reactor or kalkwasser addition for my chemistry, I wouldn't have the increase in sg over time and I might even waterchange less frequently but do a ~100%. However when all is said and done, the real reason I do a 45g change is cause I have a spare 45g tank sitting in my basement just for the purpose

If you're doing monthly's Seffie, I'd start with ~30%, maybe 40% if you can manage.
