I am going to go out on a limb here and tell it like I think it is.
First -- I have done extensive research in an unrelated area. My research began with a simple question from an absolute neophyte who was outside the field, (me). I had done no "research" prior to the question I asked a grizzled old "expert" in the field. Had he dismissed me. or sent me looking, I would never have proceeded because I had no basis to begin research. A few hours later that changed, and a year or so later so did the way things were done in the field for a particular problem. The "new" solution is still used today, many years later.
The above is not a looking for a pat on the back moment. It is to simply illustrate why I have an opinion and that the opinion, in this case is valid.
My opinion --- Anybody who has knowledge, with extremely few and usually economic reasons, and dismisses a seeker of that knowledge right off the bat does a disservice to everybody in the field, or in this case the hobby. Such an attitude is extremely detrimental to those who seek to improve themselves or a field of endeavor. The attitude smacks of an air of "I did it the hard way and if "you" are unwilling to do the same you are not only wasting "my" time, "you" are also not sufficiently serious to be acknowledged. It further impresses me as rather elitest and smug.
Now in "street" life such an attitude can hang a sign over the door and charge renumeration. In an internet forum full of hobbyists ranging from actual leaned experts to youngsters with an honest question about the hobby, the answer in question is, well I truthfully cannot find a word acceptable on this forum as a descriptive.
Had I received such a reception 13 short months ago as I diddled with a 20-gallon fish tank I would not now have a 12-tank fish room plus two living room and two-bedroom tanks with a variety of fish, each in appropriate water, with appropriate substrate and working toward appropriate lighting. I would have lost fish because I did not know where to begin to figure out how to properly treat their affliction. Fortunately, people here generally accepted my lack of knowledge, not as laziness, but rather as an honest seeking of information in the most efficient manner possible. The answers, always polite, sometimes firm, were welcome and led Linda and I in the right direction. Further independent research came after getting an idea of where to begin.
Two things in closing ---
First, if this post is out of hand, I apologize, and the moderators can delete it. I have no issue with that, just needed to get this off my chest.
Second, for anyone who believes it is correct to dismiss a newbie out of hand please reconsider. You may be discouraging the next marine scientist.
