The light is the signal for when you say Alexa and it starts up, but then it might not and the mic just may turn on whenever...

I have the model with the digital clock on the face on my night table. It is a great bedside clock. You can set an alarm and when it rings, you can snooze it by just tapping the top or you can say "Alexa...snooze for X minutes (x is for as many minutes as you want to snooze.

and my clock model can give you the room temperature and can turn on a device like a heater if the temperature drops to as programmed level...also can use it for a room air conditioner.
You can even set it to turn on the lights when you walk into a room
