Just found this forum and cant stop reading. I have a problem with my beautiful big telescopic fantail. He had a mark on his back which looked just like a discolouration. It now looks like...a cauliflower floret shape...cant think of any other way to desribe it. He is ok in himself in a big tank water crystal clear and he eats ok. I asked at a local fish place (UK) and they suggested Interpet anti internal bacteria no 9. Its not making any difference at all I calculated the water volume and added it exactly repeated after 5 days. I noticed today the other chap in the tank same type but smaller looks as if he has got it. Any ideas please would be welcome!!

A picture would really help? :)

I'd stop treating with that med, its not the right one, as its for internal bacteria and this is external it wont do any good, that store was probably just trying to sell.
Dont treat with anything untill we find out what it is as you will probably be wasting time and money.
so is it like a growth? lump type thing?
or is it more of a mark or erosion type thing?

I hope it isn't this, not the writer of this information below.
Lymphocystis

Symptoms:

Fish infected with Lymphocystis will present with clusters of whitish, berry-like growths on the skin and fins. These "clusters" may resemble small clutches of eggs or cauliflower (hence, it is sometimes called Cauliflower Disease). They will be clearly visible and may even become extremely large. This disease often affects the fins first.

Cause:

Viral infection. The virus will eventually kill the fish if it is unable to mount a strong enough immune response as the virus rampages through the fish’s tissues, destroying its cells.

Treatment:

As with all viral infections, there is no suitable cure or efficacious treatment; however Quick Cure claims to be helpful. I have also heard of people who trim the fish's fins, followed by several baths in Malachite Green. Fortunately, this disease is uncommon and in some cases, infected fish are able to recover quickly without treatment.

Lymphocystis is highly infectious. When infected cells from the fish’s skin or fins burst the virus is spread throughout the aquarium and can remain contagious for periods of up to two months. Fish not showing symptoms should be removed from the aquarium and placed in quarantine, away from other fish, for at least 60 days. Note, remove uninfected fish, not the other way around because the aquarium has become contaminated. The infected aquarium should be emptied and thoroughly disinfected before returning any fish to it. Do not use soap to clean the aquarium.

Thanks for quick reply. Cant post piccies would take me too long to sort out. It is a lump on side of fish about half an inch across nothing like I have seen before not fungus or cotton wool, just looks like floret on a cauliflower. I havent used that medication for 5 days now anyway. Just been and looked at fish and I would describe it as 6 raised white lumps clustered together like a human cold sore. Going to have a look on google see if I can find anything. Any ideas in the meantime?

Thanks Wilder for your reply that sounds like it. Not sure what to do now. Could move the other fish but that looks as if it could be infected. Thanks for all your help!

Been rummaging around under the sink in my fish medical box and have found King British WS3 white spot terminator and the first ingredient is malachite green! careful calculation is necessary. Ok going to give it a try. wish me luck!

Good luck.

You would be better off just maintaining good water quality and keeping an eye on ammonia and nitrite levels. With good water the infection can go down on its own.

Why would it take long to post pictures? it would be so helpful as you could be treating for the wrong thing.

The most important thing is perfect water so try and keep ammonnia and nitrites at 0ppm and nitrates below 20 and you can do baths with that treatment but still try your hardest to find out for definate what this thing is. :)

How the fishy doing today? :)

just gonna have a close look.....talk about un cooperative he wouldnt turn round!....it looks different had to put some more stuff in today...no worse any way...the fish that is in with him is smaller and he didnt like the medication but I really have nowhere else to put him
 keep you informed of his progress! thanks for asking.

with cauliflower disease it is catching for the other fish, so really you must seperate them and treat individually or they will continue to pass the virus back and forth.

O K The cauli fish is now in a tank by himself being treated and he is not amused! I have explained what I am doing it for and it wasnt my idea  but he is not a happy bunny!

Update on Cauli fish I have had to go out and get him a filter as my spare tank keeps getting occupied by fish. The thing on his side looks no worse ..different....he is such a lovely fish and having a filter has cheered him up no end. He did have some real weed in the tank but he has shredded that so he is just playing with the bubbles from the filter now! He had frozen food to eat today but I am nevr sure whether to feed them much when you ar giving them medication?
