I can't say I agree that trial and error is the way to go - do as much research beforehand to make sure you've got a high chance of success with whatever you add. Yes, it will ultimately depend on the fish personality (and given that the Oscar probably thinks he owns that tank, any introduction could be tricky), but just plopping a fish in and hoping for the best could end in tears.
