all you need to do is pull up 1 floorboard and see which way the joists go.

put it against a load bearing wall and over a couple of joists and you should be fine :)

or even easier, If you have wooden floorboards, the joists go the opposite way to the floorboards
 
There's another way to get at the joists. Do you have any ceiling lights in the floor below? Pull one down and look at which side of the box is fastened. It should be screwed into a joist.

If you want to be entirely sure, a carpenter or building inspector will be able to tell you in a few minutes if the floor should hold the weight, but they'll charge.

Nope. You should be able to call around and ask, though. I had my floors checked for free - one of my neighbors is a contractor, lol.
