Probably typical newbie nervousness but I've had my tank running nearly 48 hrs now and have started a fishless cycle but I'm a little concerned over the temperature, the tank is a Juwel Vision 180 with their standard heater, I set the dial to the centre but the temp last night was around 82.5F which I believe is a little high and may kill the plants I have. From one end to the other on the heaters scale there are 24 clicks so I've set the dial 6 clicks in from the "-" end. This was left overnight and this morning the temp is 79.2F (26.2C) which is worrying me a bit as I'm nearly at the point I can't set the heater any lower yet the temp is still high. Having said that the weather is quite warm at the moment and may be infuencing the temp, should I be worried at all or should I just chill (no pun intended!)?

Cheers,

Keith

your temp is ok
the safe zone is 23-28C or 73-82F (most tropical fish)

I don't know where you are located, but I live in Boston, MA and my heater hasn't turned on in 4 months. Set the heater for somewhere in the 75-78 range and it will provide a good safe floor for the temperature. Keeping it down is always tough in the summertime for many of us.

And 82 is just about perfect for fishless cycling. It may be iffy for your plants depending on which species you are trying to keep. I'd ask that question in the Planted Tank forum.

Welcome and Good Luck!

My loaches tank have always set on 82 there is no problem at all :).

Hi. Keith. I have the Rio 180 myself, when we first set it up we played for days turning the heater down to obtain the correct temp. We ended up with it on the lowest setting possible & turned it off completly when we started to get warmer weather. Temp reading today is 28c (with heater off) so am now off to do a water change.

So what do you do in the summertime to get temperatures down. We've been enjoying some unusually high temperatures in the UK recently, and my empty tank which is still cycling has been seen at a steady 85F during the last 3 days only dropping to 82F at night.

Is there a recommended way to cool the water, when we have these extreme temperatures. Luckily being in the UK - it doesn't happen all that often.

Unless you have $300 or more to spend on a chiller, try a small "clip-on" fan and set it to blow over top of the water. It's usually good for lowering the temp 3-5 degrees.

i've had nothing but trouble with my juwel heaters. one wouldn't switch off last week so i had it changed and the new one seemed ok. went to bed, got up next morning to find my tank was reading over 30 :-( heater was on!!!!! managed to cool tank by placing ice blocks(the sort you put in a picnic boxes) in the tank, and leaving windows open and lid up. Have now bought a different make heater. I can see what it is set at and my tank has been a steady temp since

What did you replace it with? does it fit in the same place as the Juwel, I do like the way it's hidden away in the "box".

My tanks temps are pretty much between 81-84 all summer due to the extreme heat(btw that is with the air cond, it can't fight that much heat). I keep them at 81 the rest of the year...

When they get past 83, I'll put a fan near the tank, and float some bags of ice in it to bring it down a degree or two. The smaller one heats up fastest, and its acryllic.

Never had a temp related prob with the fish, so long as temp changes are slow and there is adequate air....it should be ok. There are natural fluctuations in nature too, just make sure it doesnt drop extremely at night.

i replaced it with a BluCima ferplast heater. it fits in the box just the same. i just kept the little hanging bracket from the juwel and slipped it over the new one. not had a single problem with it.

Tanks been a fairly constant 26 now, so any panic is over, thanks for all the posts.
