Hey guys :)

I bought a stand a while back and my 57 litre is currently sat on it. When I got it I asked the lfs how much weight it would take and they said up to 100 litres.

I've now got my eye on a 95 litre tank at p@h - it comes complete with filter, heater, hood with light and is reduced to £135

I'm hoping santa will give me enough cash to be able to afford it.

How will I know if my stand will take the weight of a 95 litre. I know from experience not to take the word of lfs staff

Here's a picture (ignore all the stuff in the background, I was selling my childhood toys on ebay lol)

That looks to be a tank specific stand and i can see the tank in my head, theyre normally black or silver, taller than they are wide, with a rounded front, but cant remember what the make is!

Personally, i wouldnt put anything on it thats wider that the stand. It also appears to have no little "lugs" or anything else to stop the tank sliding off the side should something bump it.

the tank is situated in my bay window so nothing can bump into it. When I got the 2ft tank my Dad fastened a piece of thick melemine to the top of the stand to support the weight. It's been fine these past few months. I don't think this stand will take a 94 litre though. I got it cos it was a bargain - £10!!!

Its difficult to tell how much it would hold but if you could work out much that thank would weigh and put weights on top to the same weight plus some more to see if that would hold it. Only thing is if it won't hold it. And breaks u will lose the stand then some1 else may have a better idea

that could work smokeyjo, all the support with this stand is in the central column, as mowbz said, it's designed for a specific tank.
I think the reason I got it so cheap was because said specific tank was no longer available (I think the lfs got the tanks and stands in a lot and someone bought a tank and didn't want the stand leaving them stuck with a stand that didn't fit anything - hence 'you can take it for a tenner')

It looks as if I need to consider where I would put this 95 litre tank before I rush down there with santa's cash lol ...hmmm

Looks strong compared to what my 240L is standing on, id personally just go for it but keep away from heavy tank decor until you feel it's safe enough.

it is very sturdy, the central columns are in 6 seperate bits - screwed to base and top with 6 6 inch screws. I'm still in two minds about this 95 litre though. Ideally it would have it's own cabinate but the cabinate it's stood on is in beach (yuk, I like dark wood - oak or something like) but that's an extra 80 quid ...

I'd personally test it befor putting a tank ob there the last think u want is to spend ur xmas money on a tank and it smashes. That's the only problem with the nicer woods is they are more exspensive

I wouldn't risk it myself, just incase the worst happens.

I reckon if you give it a couple of weeks you'll find yourself a bargain on ebay, tank and stand. Everyone starts selling things in January!

I would definitely caution you to read the description prior to either purchasing another fish tank stand or bidding on one. You're right to not want to risk it and take chance that it may not be strong enough to support your tank. To get a gauge for a price comparison, I like looking at the different fish tank stands and aquarium stands online at petco.com as well as other sites. They also provide you with relatively competent descriptions so that you know the maximum number of gallons they can support. Good luck!!!

That top of that stand doesnt look 2ft wide. is it?

You cant have an overhanging edge as the tanks weight wont be distributed properly, which will crack the base eventually.....

the top is about 18/19 inch wide. My Dad got me a thick piece of black melamine and fastened it to the top of the stand top to support the full size of the 2ft tank. Doesn't look as good but it means the tanks is fully supported.

I've decided not to risk putting a bigger tank onto this stand - either with a larger piece of wood fastened to it.

I'll see how much cash santa brings first (and if my lottery numbers come up aswell  ) and then go back to p@h with a tape measure to get the dimensions of this new tank and then I'll do a good scan on ebay aswell and work out my options

That sounds like a good idea lol. U will find 1 cheap enough if u keep looking

the only problem with ebay is finding one in my area. I don't mind travelling to Leeds or York but all the ones for sale on there recently have been down south. I might be saving a lot in the actual cost but would lose out in travelling costs
