The only reason why i went above and beyond my normal vacume is i have many caves (before settling on my curent fish, i was going to do mawali cichlids, so i had the cave decorated for them). I can't get inside the caves or between the rocks and the glass. I've got an aquaclear 50 filter for a 40 gal tank, so i should have enough filtration. Nitrates are usually around 15 with weekly water changes. I haven't seen ammonia or nitrites for a long time.

well i have a 2.5ft piece of rock in my community tank and and absolute ton of limestone in my cichlid tank so im gonna go with never too.

only jus set the cichlid tank up tho and i was wondering how im gonna go about cleaning under and around the rocks......

Went with randomly because it's hard to generalise. I have 3 tanks , all heavily planted. I certainly don't uproot all the plants on a regular basis. But when something needs to come out I clean under it. And certain ornaments I do take out. Not sure a little mulm or algae is that harmful as long as the water stats are good. I've noticed that the most bacteria detritus and poo tends to gather round the feeding spaces anyway, rather than in the caves.
