To be honest I don't have any experience with Under Gravel filters so it's not very fair for me to comment. But based on what I've read / heard, they can be harder to maintain than other filter types. Hopefully someone will help us out with this!

So where abouts are you upto now? Everything set up and running (apart from heater)? Have you tested your water yet? What kind of fish are you thinkin of gettin?

Trig is too hard. Try A=1/2bh and add in the 4.5 by 16 to get about 1.39. Multiply that by 1.5 feet tall to get 2 cubic feet. At 7.5 gallons to the cubic foot, I can almost do this one in my head and get 15 gallons. Close enough?

Yeah, the only thing was I did not know the angles at the time.

So not knowing the angles would mean that I would have to use a different method.

I did not know that the angle that connected the two 16 inch sides formed a right angle. If I did, then yes, I could of done that in my head too.

After I found the answers, or as I was doing to the problem, I figure out that the main corner was 90 degrees and so forth...lol.

You think trig is too hard, , you should try doing limits in calc! Wooh! now that is mind bending, at least at first! Trying to find epsilon and delta! What a mind job! lol... glad now I get it, after a couple more days of classes!

ok guys, heres pics of my 2 rather empty looking tanks.

this is the juwel rekord 80, finally sussed out the filter and it now has all new and appropriate filters. the light is quite bright but looks alot brighter in te pics . this has just had water treatment, not sure weather to progress with it more yet or not as im waiting on plants and more sand to be deliverd as i underestermated how much i needed

then this one, i need a filter, and to make a hood and get a light for it.

this one has also just had the water treatment added, and the filter start added for the first time too.

A UG filter cannot be used with sand so the tank in the picture cannot use one. If you have the right semi-coarse gravel and a UGF, you will always need to remember that your filter is the gravel. What that means is that you clean your filter with a gravel vac and you need to get a nice uniform bed of gravel back on top of that filter plate when you are done. What this means in practical terms is that you have some limits on what you can put into the tank as far as decor and you will need to keep your plantings to a minimum because you want to be able to move things around and clean most of the gravel thoroughly. The gravel bed will also look much thicker than we usually use these days because you still need to get enough gravel cover over the filter plate and, of course, the filter plate sits fairly high off the bottom glass although you usually can't see it because of the plastic trim around the bottom.
