Tank height for a pleco?

Just curious how much height is really needed? I would think that the length of the tank is more important then the height, but how high does it really need to be? (for plecos that don't get much bigger then a foot)
 
probly a few inches higher than however long the plec is although u can get away with much less and still be fine. just use a reasonable height and not like 10"
 
For safety - I'd reccomend 2ft, with clearence above that for the lights etc so there is clearance.

Ours is 16" high and when our 9" plec goes up for air he dosn't exactly do it carefully, but there is 2 inches before anything he can hit.

My parents lost their 10" common when he hit the glass covers on their 18" high tank. He hit his head hard as he went up for air and drifted to the bottom and died.
