Take A Look At My Frontosa Please.

This Frontosa (which I think is a female)is showing signs of damage. I have not witnessed any bullying by the larger Fronts or any other tank mates for that matter. However there has been a few violent splashes and gravel disturbances but I've never been able to see who is involved. No other fish has any signs of anything and water stats are spot on (as always)

Anyway, since putting on my glasses I have noticed the damage. There are no bloody streaks in the fins which is a good sign but having no knowledge of illnesses in fish (been lucky I guess) I'm not sure.

Take a look if you know about these things and state your diagnosis please.

Oh and if it is just a case of harassment then she'll be up for grabs

I can`t help I`m afraid, sorry. The only thing I`ve read about Frontosa being bullied was something to do with the number of females:males

That would be my guess

She was one of 4 that I obtained. They were all the same size about a year ago. One I moved on, the other 2 look like males and are presently 4-5". This one remained at the same size since getting her (around 2") which makes me think it's a female, that and the forehead shape)
I know the male-female ratio is totally #14### about face but until now has not been a problem. She'll have to go for her own sake

Obviously my tank won`t be up and running for another few days yet but If a single Frontosa would go with my stocking plans then I`d take her off your hands doresy.

Sure thing She was lovely and will be again. Shall be keeping an eye on her and will probably isolate her for a while anyway.
Price will be a fraction of what LFS ask, a safe home is far more a priority

I would also second (or third) bullying, she does look female, 3 is not a great number for fronts they will pick on her, I have a larger group of fronts ranging from 2" - 5" and dont get many nipping problems. If the other 2 are male they will harrass her lots.

No worries doresy. I will do some reading up on the compatibility as I'm determined to have some ocellatus and wouldn't want to risk them being lunch. If there isn't likely to be an issue we'll possibly sort something out

I spent some time just watching the tank to see if I could work out who the culprit is. The 2 bigger Fronts paid her no attention whatsoever even if she swam right by. The Neolamprologus Tretocephalus and the Hap gave her the odd 1 second chase but no more than all cichlids do from time to time. She didn't seem singled out for any bad treatment from anyone in particular.

have you noticed her hiding a bit? i had a firemouth that had nipped fins and was hiding a little ( i could tell she wasnt right). then next day was dead. didnt have a clue who it was. As said if female, she could be getting harrassed by the other 2 males. hmmm

One of my smaller females kept getting nipped fins, I never saw which front was doing it, untill one night I was having trouble sleeping and came down and watched them in the semi dark and saw it was the large male doing all the chasing, but never during the day. As the damage is to her dorsal fin and tail, this would be the other males as the female tends to stand on her tail in a submissive position, this is when I have seen the male then bite at the dorsal fin.

Shame I am so far away, she could have joined my group.

Nice one Good call. Obviously the 2 male are the likely culprits only they may be crafty. I will try to check things out during lights out.

It's crazy really as the little darling is quite oblivious of her condition. She feeds well, is certainly not shy and shows not outward signs of bullying.
