I always thought that my freeze dried blood worms were only delicious treats for fish.

So I always fed using fish flakes because on the package it read that it held complete nutrition for all fish.

I was looking at the bottle of the freeze dried bloodworms and it also said that it was great food for all tropical fish.

I'm wondering if its ok to switch from feeding flakes to blood worms? I want to do this because it seems a lot cleaner because the flakes dont fall to the ground. The bloodworms on the other hand stay at the top of the water, plus the fish seem to like them a lot more.

I would suggest usuing a variety of each and possiably some other types of food for your fish :D

I agree - the worms should just be a part of their diet. It says it's good for most tropicals, which is true, but it's not good as the sole food for them. The flakes are infused with many nutrients, and I wouldn't completely remove it from the diet. Most tropical fish are omnivores and do need nutrients the worms won't provide.

try feeding flakes one day, worms the next, peas the next etc etc and they will get a varied diet

That's pretty much how I go about it, with a fasting day or two each week. Brine shrimp and mysis shrimp are also good, and I always have spirulina flakes on hand - very healthy protein for omnivores.

Yep- we feed alsorts of differing food. We have top feeders - hatchetfish, anywhere feeders (!) Tiger Barbs, swordtails, pristellas, and bottom feeders (bronze corys). We also have glass catfish which are mid feeders but can be quite slow on the uptake when we feed, so can miss out on fast dropping food like bloodworm - with their barbs they are completely unable to feed in anything other than midwater and certainly not on the bottom.

Hence we also choose some fairly slow dropping food like frozen daphnia, tubifex etc

We also have an acquatic frog which loves meat but also takes a few minutes to realise its dinner time!

Hence we feed a variety to ensure that everything gets its chance at food at some point. We have not had any problem with either flake food or frozen. Occasionally we will feed tiny bits of cooked chicken which the fish absolutely love - but we ensure that it is all eaten and remove any bits left (as if!) We also use catfish pellets which all the fish love - apart from the glass cats - again - they cannot eat off the bottom.

Bloodworms are very high in protein which makes them hard for fish to digest. I wouldn't use them more often that once a week. They can lead to constipation problems. As everyone else suggested, a varied diet is best. After all, you would even get tired of filet mignon (or veggie burgers if your a non-meat eater) if you had to eat it everyday.

I sure would, but I'm not a fish.
