Sushi and the Aquarist

Bunjiweb, if your Japanese freinds return the visit, then give them blue cheese to eat - seems like more Japanese people have a problem with blue cheese than non-Japanese people have a problem with sushi. -_-

Odd, though, I'd have thought that far fewer people who keep pet fish would eat fish at all, never mind sushi. Seems like we're all a bit wierd. :alien:

I generally don't eat fish at all (unless McDonald's and Captain D's count) so sushi is certainly out. Tried it once at the behest of DH, but most definitely did not go back for seconds. Funny though, I like most other seafood. About the only exceptions are octopus/squid & eel. It still has to be cooked though...

I don't do seafood ;) I can handle tuna if it's mixed with something and battered squid rings but in general the taste is too strong for me. I can't stand the smell either.

It's really funny watching me buy seafood for the fish....Seafood medley held at arms length through the whole store gets triple bagged at checkout.

Not that weird. Fish cover a huge number of organisms and species. As mentioned earlier, do a significant number of people who keep cats or dogs not eat beef because they're all mammals? Or do people who own parrots or canaries stop eating chicken?

I see what you're saying, but then MOST people who keep pet fish keep / have kept (at least) one fish which is the "same" basic body shape as you IMAGINE the fish you eat have. I mean, salmon, rainbow trout, etc, compared to (e.g.) goldfish or cichlids: they are more similar at first glance than (e.g.) parrots and chickens.
I'm not so much saying that this is the reality, as that this is the emotional perception I'd have thought people would have.

If I kept something edible, like Salmon, I'd have no qualms about eating salmon either.

The fish I keep aren't really edible (platy stir fry, anyone?), but doesn't mean I wouldn't eat them if they were :)

I wouldn't eat the ones in the tank, mind you, but others of the species.

That is how I feel too, but I've always thought that I'm a bit calous in that respect and that most people wouldn't. I wasn't really saying that I think there's something wrong in it, more that i'm genuinely surprised that more people aren't more squeemish about eating fish when they keep them as pets, particularly ones that seem "similar" to the ones you'd eat.

*shrug* I've kept geese as pets before and I wouldn't hesitate to eat goose. I'm not sure I'd want to eat the ones that I've named and kept as pets. After all, I have elevated them in my own mind above the food level. I love sushi, but I certainly wouldn't eat my bettas. First of all, there's not much meat on their little bones, and they'd probably be too fishy tasting for my taste anyway. *grin*

I'm not sure I find it so unusual that fish keepers would eat fish. I don't think they'd eat their own fish, but if I'm a rancher, it wouldn't stop me from eating steak and hamburger, or if I keep chickens, I'm still having fried chicken for dinner. I keep my tank fish for company. I keep the salmon in the freezer for dinner. :)
