Sometimes it works with guppies sometimes it doesn't. Most feel it's not worth the risk because if your betta decides he likes guppy tail you've got to either get another tank or get rid of one or the other.

Also I think 5-6 is a better number for corys.

Yep I would think 6 corys and a betta would be fine. I'm guessing we're talking a 2ft tank here?

Yep its W60cm x D30cm x H36cm
Group of small fish? Or just play it safe?

Odd shaped tanks might look nice, but stocking them can be a problem.
Think you're right to go for a more conventional shaped tank.
You could have some corys in there with a Betta & maybe a few ember tetras for the mid level

I like the galaxy rasboras or glo fish from the list (after checking them all out on google images)
Suppose it depends on the lfs really.
