::shrugs:: Last time I checked, no water-dwelling animals lives in an environment where they can see their relfection when the look down. Granted, no fish is especially supposed to be in a tank with ceramic caves, silk plants, and glass walls, either. But I think that if you can mimic the conditions they would naturally live in as mch as possible, it reduces stress and is best for your fish. So, my bettas have a bottom made of fine brown polished (well, smooth?) gravel. Yeah, I'm sure they have something more like silty-mud in the wild, but that seems like it'd be hard to gravel vac...

In short, I use substrates to hold my plants down, give old food and poop a place to settle (because I don't want my boys to lie in feces when the sleep), allow the bettas a more natural feeling bottom to rest on, and to prevent them from being stressed by thier reflection on the tank bottom. That, and I think it is more asthetically pleasing than something barren.

fun fact~ some of the Singapore clubs use water bottles to raise fry in. These are indeed small BUT they use little bitty ceramic rings with carbon glued to the other side of them.

I don't use any in all but my female community which has sand. The reason I don't use it in the divided ones is that its easier to use the syphon without the gravel vac on the end of it when doing the sections. I have plants in washed out yogurt pots and just have some gravel in there :)

I've got either flat marbles or gravel in all my 1 gallons. It would be easier without them, but I like the look. I've got river rocks in two of my 2.5s, and sand in one, and the divided 10 gallon has natural-looking gravel. I'll switch the 10 gallon over to sand one day when I'm motivated :p
