Substrate For Planting

Hi Everyone
My first de-lurking post.
What is the best substrate to use when planting out a tank?.
I need an inert substrate as I will be having soft acidic water and do not want anything leeching into it.
How long roughly would it be best to wait to start planting?, This is a new setup.

i use eco-complete..it looks great its all black and somewhat sandy..my bottom dwellers love it and dig thru it..cories,kuhli loaches,and my clown loach.
i heard there is a new formula so you might ask what people think as i have no info on that..

I actually found some at a chain store, called PetSmart. I couldn't believe it

pestmart...those are everywhere here..theres two in my city..i couldnt find it anywhere and had to order from ebay and wait a month to get it...dang it

I actually had a look in petsmart yesterday but they did not have any.
