Yesterday I we had the carpets cleaned, I asked the lady if it would hurt the fish tank at all, and she said no... Well that happened at around 1:00 in the afternoon, and by dinnertime the fish were all looking a little off color. My rummy nose tetra's nose wasn't looking very red, and they were all rather sluggish. I hadn't cleaned the tank for a couple weeks, and I figured that could have been the problem. Well this morning I went up there to feed them and do a water change, and they all looked perfectly healthy, as if nothing had happened. The only thing I could think of was that the carpet cleaning lady didn't know what she was talking about when she said it wouldn't affect the aquarium...

but how would it affect the tank if it didnt get in it? And when did you check on the fish? Time wise. When I check on my fish around 8-9 they are all sluggish because its late, and fish sleep right?

It wasn't too late, and they weren't just tired sluggish... They didn't look healthy--labored breathing, less vibrant colors, etc etc. As for how it could affect the tank... You could smell the stuff she had used on the carpet, I figured the fumes could have somehow gotten in there... I could be just paranoid of course.

If she used a dry cleaning substance, then the fumes could have got into the tank and the right thing to do was to do a major water change. If ever I do any decorating or anything that has strong fumes, then I cover the tanks with a thick blanket until the the fumes dissipate.

:( If it's in the air, it's in your tank water, too! Cigarette smoke, air freshener spray, cooking fumes (fried foods esp., the oily smoke), candles burning, paint fumes, bug spray, colognes, deodorant spray--it all affects your fish!
