Stress from shipping???

I just sent out my first shipment of bettas from my Melano Copper HM breeding. They arrived looking really good, but now one of the fish that went from Michigan to Tennessee - a marble butterfly - is showing a little red in the white of his fins.

The woman I sent them to is very experienced with fish, so she isn't freaking out - we're both assuming it's the stress of shipping and the change in water quality. But I wondered if anyone had any suggestions for her on how to deal with this? or what to watch out for in case it started getting worse?

Yeevia? anyone else? I haven't had any issues with these babies - never even lost ONE of them! - and I've never seen red in any of their fins.

Any ideas???

Hi everyone,

I am the person who received the bettas from justhal...they are beautiful, btw :)

The red seems to be more near the ends of the tail and and slightly at the tips of the dorsal and ventral where circulation would be lesser.

My fishie knowledge is pretty much strictly goldfish and I know that red in their fins often means that they are stressed.

Any advice would greatly be appreciated :) I'd really like to get these guys settled in and feeling great.

Thanks in advance!

justhal. Wou! How come you didn't post your babies in here! I like to see how they progress. Any breeding going on again?
As for the red fin, just keep giving clean water and a tiny bit of salt. :p

Thanks! ..will do!

How much salt do you recommend? 1 tsp per 5 gallons or a bit more? I've seen all sorts of amts recommended.

Thanks for jumping in YB - I was really hoping you'd have some advice.

My babies are about 4 months old now and I'm just starting to move a few. Golden Mermaid is a great 'fishlady' and has helped me with my goldfish immeasurably.

She now has FIVE bettas from my spawning - a turquoise HM; a copper HM; a copper butterfly HM; a platinum turquoise marble HM PK; and a turquoise female HM. Talk about 'initiation by fire!' LOL!!!

We both suspect it's just a little issue from the stress of shipping and the change from my water - softer and more acidic - to hers. Still, we figured it would be better to have some solid advice before it turned into anything...

I've tried to take some photos to post but they turn out like crap! I got some wonderful fish, and a large variety of color - BUT none are melano copper like their dad! Some wonderful coppers, turquoise, marbles AND some nice butterfly bettas, but none have the black fins like pops!

Oh, yeah... I'm planning a couple more breedings too. I want to cross dad with one of his daughters, hoping that if I double up on his genes I will get some melano coppers. I also love the platinum turquoise marbles, and would like to get a spawn from the pair I kept.

Thanks again for your advice - you think just keeping the water clean and maintaining a little salt will do the trick? I know G-Mermaid will be looking for the help.

Hey, got anything you want to trade???

maybe 1/4 teaspoon for 5 gallon. :) A little. :) Oh yeah, not tablesalt. sea salt that you can get at petstore. :)
Justhal, want to trade this? LOL

Wow! gorgeous!!

Ok 1/4 per 5 gallons it is! That is a little def not what I'm used to...I'm a total newbie to bettas. Thanks again!

Joking! LOL. This guy is flowing in on july 4 with a female sibling.
As for your babies, I know that it is not easy to get to the one like father. Actually the breeder using melano to cross with copper. So yours might be F1. I am not sure what color your all babies are but if you can sellect two that are similar colors like green scales with black melano, breed that pair. Sellect the pair is very important if you want to get some look like father.
Did you got any true halfmoon out of this batch? How many male you got and how many female? I have my blue line that carried melano geno and I got melano babies.:) I think they have blue scales and black! :) I got some are halfmoon plakat too and I think it is from the mom.:)
So what you want to trade with me?:) See what I got. :)

OK! I think you should sellecting your copper pair out of the batch and breed again. Both had melano geno and you will be surprise to get melano like the father. ;) Sellect the copper pair!!!:) That is my 2 cents to pick to get the father look.

Yeah, you're too funny, YB - I saw your other post and know you just bought him! LOL!!!

Yes, I got a lot of HMs out of the spawn - a few that are really incredible, some that are just real good. I also got a number of HM PKs and some that are deltas or super deltas from the looks of them right now. I'm still seeing a lot of development: fish that were just average are developing some really nice finnage the past couple weeks.

MOST of them are males. Out of 90 fish, I only got about 25 females.

Yeah, I'll see about putting a pair of the coppers together - AND breeding the father back to a daughter!

So what have you been breeding lately? ...anything unusual???

yeeviabetta i thought you were going to stop buying bettas from aqua-bid and here you are again buying have you found an empty beanie box under the bed.......    nice though who,s he from...

Bettaman! oh yeah! How have you been! LOL I already posted! Opps! I did it again. LOL Is that funny? LOL  You know me, I can't help if I saw something different and cool looking bettas. Well, OK. No more aquabid for a while. Have to concentrating on my breeding for this year novice competition. LOL No beanie bean for now! I get tupperware now! LOL Much better for the halfmoon and more room for the fishy to swim. LOL I don't even have to clean the beanie bean like usual! That is a plus! Now the beanie bean is just for the juvenile babies up to three weeks. Then will decide which one to keep and which one to cull. LOL j/k! Give out for freebies or selling them cheap. :)
Well, my cross breeding crowntail and hm are doing very good. I pump them up now and they look very unique colors! Like salamar and very pretty colors. :) Those are the specialty and I planning to pick some for the competition for novice this year. The blue line are doing great and some did have very nice strong fins with halfmoontail. So those are also going to competiting. I have a new batch of green hm coming alone great and they looks promissing. 1/2 to 2/3 long. Those will be my next few months. I don't know how are my plakat cross with doubletail tail in my yard! They growth pretty fast and very healthy. The colors are very interesting too. :) I might move some of my good babies out to the yard too. I do have red doubletail coming babies and the orange black doubletail plakat cross with a yellow gold plakat. That will be something cool. I got the first blue giant plakat breed and the babies are much bigger than normal babies. We will see what will be good in the future. Who know I just compete with the top dogs and forget about novice. LOL Just depends if I have all kind of section. :) LOL But my leaning is mostly novice first. It is good to think about it. Since I am on holidays now, why now just keep breeding. I got a lot of pairs to breed anyway. :)

yeeviabetta that is good hope you do well in the compertitions.......and yes you must stay away from aquabid although they will miss you......  sound like some interesting spawns you have and look forward to seeong some pictures..speak soon...... :D

Feel free to throw in an extra or two into my box if you'r clearing out for more room  I just picked up a 10 gallon for $2 at a rummage sale, I love this time of year for these rummage sales.
