there is this stray cat that has been around for a few yrs, but for a while now a women and her sons have claimed it as theirs. the poor thing is often abused, his recent injury was getting kicked in the mouth. he doesnt get fed. i have been feeding him for a while now with out them knowing. i asked them the other day about the cat and they didnt seem to realy care. i am thinking about going down and asking them if i can take the cat. he needs a good worming and all he wants to do is come in side especialy at nite as it is getting colder. hes not the prettiest looking cat but has the most beautiful nature. if i do end up with him he will be going straight to the vet for a check up and whatever needles he hasnt yet recieved. the person who had him bfore these people had him de sexed, they also had another two cats but as these catse were still kittens they moved and left them behind. he is the only one that is still around that i know of. the reason why i am posting is to ask if it is a good idea to go down and ask if i can take the cat? or should i just leave him with the people that claim him as theirs?

thanx in advance Vamp.

Sounds as if they have a history of treating animals badly IMHO I would call the RSPCA (I used to work for them) to prevent them continuing the abuse of animals. If the people are approachable then you could try and ask for the cat but as the owners are local it may be difficult as the cat could return to them and be once again treated badly, which would be a awful situation for the cat and you. Good luck and I hope the cat is happier soon.

people that abuse animals should be &*&^%$£&. too bad for a family forum, i would take the cat as its abused and look after it and report them to the nearest animal trust. good luck which ever decision you make :)

If anyone has witnessed the abuse, I would report them to the RSPCA - however, I would exercise extreme caution in asking them to take the cat away. It would be better if the owners could be persuaded to hand the cat over to a rescue that doesn't put healthy animals to sleep.

How do you know it was kicked though? Facial injuries to parts of the body like the jaw are more than often caused by accidents involving vehicles.

a naighbour saw the person kick it. these people drink alot and the cat has a habbit of biting when it is getting alot of attention, wich is probably why he is getting the abuse. its the womens cat n she is quite nice (its all the others that drink) so it would be her that i would ask. if she says no i will then report it. i some how dont think he will go back there as he has been living in our back yard for a while.

cats will go where their is food, if you feed him and keep him in your house overnight he will probably stay, he's not their cat so i don;t think they could do anything about it.

well he is never at their place anymore he stays in my back yard, all day and night. they claim it as theirs but he doesnt have a colar and i asked them the other night if he had a name and they said no. i have been calling him simba ( he looks like a little lion) and he now comes to the name. i have also set up a bed ( weel a box with a blanket ) in the back yard for him to sleep in, wich he dies, as it is now getting pretty cold at night. but i want to do the right thing first and ask if i can take the cat, just incase they think im stealing it or something.

Well, if I was in your situation I would just take the cat anyway, wrong, morally, I know but when it comes to animals and abuse nothing will stop me getting them away from it.
Let us know how it goes after you have spoke to the women. Actually, just had a thought, if you speak to her and she mentions it to the ones that drink and cause the abuse they could hurt the cat even worse. I'd just report it immediatly or just let the cat come straight in and live with you.
Do you have any pics of the cat?
Goodluck, keep us updated!

i'd just worry that if you ask them and they say no and get angry with you, then the rspca come out, it's a bti obvious who called them isn't it. wouldn't want you getting into any bother

There's not really much point calling the RSPCA, they're unlikely to be able to do anything much, and if anything will make the situation worse (for instance, taking it to a shelter where it will probably be killed). Even if they did prosecute, all that would happen is a fine and a slap on the wrist. I believe the law says that cat's aren't exactly anyone's property, so it's unlikely they could do anything if it did decide to live with you- I think the best course of action would be to continue to gain it's trust, it's not going to go back if it doesn't get any love or attention.

if you ask them for the cat and they so no.So you get the rspca to take the cat away they will think it was you and give you greaf.Especialy if they drink alot.I would just leave your door open in the day and see if the cat comes in.Try it a few times then it may think thats his home and come in all the time.i would personaly take the cat.

If it was me i wouldnt give a rats backside for the people who claim to own him.

The cat knows its safe with you and loved, so do what you can for him

Its pretty hard for the abusers to prove they own him with no ID on him, and if they make a song and dance then tell them you can call the animal welfare in to let them judge..
If you take him to the vet then make sure you get pics of injuries and detailed reports on his condition and keep them safe.
He sounds lovely, so give him some tlc and hope he stays away from them.

take it to the vet and have all the treatments you can afford. then take the cat to the supposed owner and demand the cash back! then let see if they are in a hurry to say the cat is actually theirs. i'm sure they won't. that's how i got my old cat. the poor thing had an abscess and i took it to the vet to have it remove. but it costed me almost £400 ( AUS$1000) . i took the cat back to the owner and they claimed it was never their cat anyway. it was a lot of money, but the reward i received from pip ( the cat) was worth every penny. if they refuse to pay, tell them you are going to keep the cat, if they refuse, ring the rspca and report them.
