Stranger In My Tank

Any advice on how I can, in the easiest & safest way possible, get rid of the pesty mojano??

soldering iron

get rock out, hold outside (because this is going to stink), fry the pesky nem with the soldering iron, wash rock in old tank water and put rock back.

@sorgan Thanks for the heads up!

I might take another picture of the anemone looking guy when he's emerging later on..

If you don't have a soldering iron or want to treat in the water 'aiptasia x' will work. You just insert a syringe into the anemone and inject it with pink stuff and it implodes! Completely reef safe. :good:

Oh cool!
Went to the LFS they told us the boob thing is probably an anemone of some sort. Also about the syringe.. They said even some fresh water injected into it would do the job? What do you think?

We'll probably go back and get the syringe next weekend. Was thinking about getting a damsel to chuck in there too.... At the moment the bigger Chromis bullies the smaller one from time to time... Nothing to worry about they both still seem happy swimming around the tank and all but do you think getting another fish would add fuel to fire with the bullying?

It wont work, it will just move imo. Re the damsel, save yourself some heartache later on down the line and dont buy anything that you dont love and want in your tank

I dno about love, hard to build a relationship with a fish I havn't spent time with... But these blue neon damsels have caught my eye for a few weeks now and I thought they would suit as they are similar size to the chromis I have and my tank is quite small at the moment anyways...

I would ask the lfs but I'm sure they would just bs me into buying it either way.

does look like a nem to me, potentially a great hitch hiker to find but probably not suitable for your tank whatever species it turns out to be

i wouldn't even think about buying a damsel

they get very (read VERY) aggressive and almost always lose their looks as they mature

in a tank your size a fish being picked on has almost no where to hide

two chromis isn't an ideal number, one of the reasons for normally having a group is that it spreads the aggression between the group rather than a single dominant fish bothering the weaker one. personally i would go for a single chromis or 5+

I agree with @ombomb on this one. Damsels are a pain the backside when introducing new fish as they will more than Likely bully them to the point where the fish gets stressed and could end being fatal.

I've had my fair share of damsels and chromis and unless you keep chromis in a large shoal then expect problems with aggression.

I have one blue yellow tail damsel in mine and although he has been good up to now, now he's maturing he's starting to show signs of aggression towards my other fish.

I can see myself offloading him soon.

Hm. I dont know what to do now. We ended up getting a bow tie damsel and yes it was agressive. We took it back immediately & replaced it with a kole tang. which was doing supurbly as far as I could tell before. That was about 2-3 weeks ago. Just today and this morning I havnt seen him in the tank. I think he's hiding dead under some rocks. But seriously the last time I saw him I thought he was fine?

I also just found my Goby about 5 mins ago dead by the heater, it looks like he might have died last night as well. I've tested PH & salt and seems fine. Havnt checked anything else yet.

Chromis are fine but that doesnt surprise me everyone keeps saying they survive most things.

What do I need to do next? Clean the water? Clean the whole tank? This is the first death in the tank after having it for round 4-5 months now. =(

Actually the only thing we really did differently in the past week or so is replace the carbon bag in the filter with another sponge instead. The LFS advised us that the carbon bag wasnt really useful if you have had the tank running for more than 2 months already.

Is this true? Could this be why they are dying?

[update].... =( I just found poor Tangy now floating...

looks like an amonia spike from removing the carbon filter.

On another note theres another hitchhiker... i only saw his fat hairy legs as he retreated into a rock... he was real scarey looking but i couldnt get a good enough look to describe much more than that...

swear next time I will get the deadest live rock avaliable!!! I thought hitchhikers were a bonus but they are stressing me out!!
