they sure understand pain though

I believe that isn't actually true, most animals don't appear to understand why they are actually in pain.

Though its a shame you didn't have insurance, even through a "credit crunch" it really is only like £3/4 for some animals.
 
Hey was in argos buying more sand for our tanks and saw pet insurance reminded me of this post, Just thought you might be interested in some ideas you could put forward to your mothers involving pet insurance.

Argos is currently from £3.83 for cats per month at a basic cover level which is sufficient and won't break the bank account. It's the cost of a few newspapers.
Tesco is from £4.32 a month for the most basic.

They are relatively cheap, the insurance for my female border collie is around £8 a month and that has been claimed on twice for illnesses she has had and we've had no problems or increase in premium. Of course you would have to disclose that your cat has been injured recently but if something similar happened again in the future you would be able to offer your pet the best care it can get.
