Hi, iv attached a link on this to a video of my Neons really strange behaviour that he/she has been doing for the past 2 nights. He/she just keeps swimming in the same spot and being very aggressive to any others that come near him when he does this! It’s only at night! Not off his/her food either or doing anything else strange, also noticed discolouration on top of his/her head going along it’s spine. It’s a new tank that has only been running for just over a month and had dangerous nitrite levels on Saturday, (4.0) due to rubbish advice from the start from the LFS staff about cycling my tank! I have since then liquid tested my water parameters every day and have been doing 50-75% water changes every day because my ammo and nitrites have been above 0 and my nitrate was above 20.0. Water parameters this morning before doing a 50% water change were:

Ammo: 0.2
Nitrite: between 0-0.25
Nitrate: 5.0

The woman at the fish store told me it was likely that all the Neons (there’s 6 in my tank) would die due to the high nitrite levels at the weekend. There’s no other fish in my tank. It’s a 25L and has an internal filter.

Just to add, an hour later nearly and he/she is still doing it! :(

He (straight blue line) looks ok, can you get a photo of the discoloration as we can't see it. Maybe his behaviour is territorial.

The little so and so is hiding from me now!! Lol swear he knows what I’m trying to do! Lol anyway iv noticed it abit on the others it’s not the best picture of one of the others but it’s like a silver/pale colour that starts at the top of their head and goes down the spine! I don’t know if it’s normal or not or if it was there before! I will try and get a better picture tomorrow as I know this doesn’t show much! :(

Neon color will pale if under a lot of stress

Feel sorry for them with my high nitrite levels at the weekend and the dramatic drop from then to now! :( don’t know what to do will be gutted if any of them don’t make it! According to the woman at the LFS they would highly likely all die or at least a few ‘drop off’ were her words :(

I can not tell from the photos, if he is larger then the others and has round belly? If so it is a female.

Im not sure what’s classed as a round belly on a neon so not sure but yeah he’s larger than the others! Naughts reckoned it was male from the video what do you think?

Just researched abit online and I’m definitely saying it’s male by the look of him.
Yeah it’s defo male. What dya reckon to the colour of him? Dya think he’s getting/got something wrong with him?
The faded color is usually due to stress, when I first put a new neon into my tank I usally noticed the faded color until they get use to their surrondings. It is easy to tell the new neon from the old neon tetras that were already there for awhile.

Aww ok thanks for replying, all’s I can do is keep doing what I’m doing then and hopefully I see the colour start to return!

Stress is also caused by your water conditions or by fish chasing or picking on each other. Good Luck
