I have a 12 gallon tank. I was wondering if I could put 9-10 female platies in it. Or a livebarrer tank with palties, sword tails, and 1 molly. Could I have some tips?

Hi there. I too have a 12gal (UK) / 15gal (US) tank and am wanting to exchange my current fish (tetras and guppies) for all livebearers. I have already taken a load of fish back to the shop a few days ago (RTBS, gourami and other tetras) to make tank space, so am looking to get swordtails or mollies and maybe platies too.
They told me in the store that they should all get on fine with each other - as long as you have at least 2 females per 1 male of the species. Have you got many plants in your tank?? I have just ordered a load (arrived this morning) so want to get them in for encouraging some fry for when I get my livebearers (hopefully tomorrow or next day).
Think I will completely swap all my existing fishes for some livebearers as its great when they have fry - also our LPS lets me take in the fry and swap for others things in there..

Is the reason you only want females is so they do not breed? If it is then most females that are kept in a mixed sex tank at a shop will already be pregnant and will most likely give birth every month for 6 months. If the reason is because males are generally more aggressive than females, then the main reason(most of the time) for the fish being aggressive is because they are fighting over females, sometimes it is just a 'rogue' fish though. Also you probably already know but platies and swordtails will interbreed(if thats the right word).
