Stocking A Sev Focused Tank

Speaking of which my aunt has a tank that has a silver dollar and a tinfoil barb... Only 29 gallons... Basically made a deal with her (she doesnt want the fish anymore) that if i took them and put them in my 75 gallon at least until i find them a new home i could have the 29 gallon... I know the fish are older so i may just keep them but if not i know of a lfs that would trade them in for credit. :) silver dollar is probably 5 inches and the tin is at least 8.

Nice I would probably trade them in (I know its a bit harsh) but they are schooling fish so would do better being added to someones tank who can accomodate them as a school - though a school of Silver Dollars in this tank would be quite nice but Tinfoils grow massive and are really active so ideally would need a bigger tank.

Ya i know, though they have lived by themselves for years so even the up grade to the 75 gallon would be nice for them. I will probably look for a lfs to trade them into though.

I am actually thinking of growing my sev a bit before I introduce any other cichlids and by that time I should have a 29 gallon free so I'm thinking i may try the jewel cichlid and if it gets to mean the 29 gallon will be waiting for it... if it doesnt then i can make my mom and sister happy with a pair of angels. :)I havent seen any elliotis around me, though im sure i could have them ordered. Also about the angelicus loaches, would they and yo yo loaches basically be interchangeable? i havent read up on yo yo's much but from the looks of things they would be.

And I'm going to ask this for my dads sake. He wanted a Jag cichlid, then i talked him out of it but he then saw a EBJD and wants one. If we kicked it back to say,
1x Green Severum
1x JB/EBJD
1-2x BN Pleco
6+x Boesemans Rainbow fish

Would the JD be to aggressive for this type of set up in a 48"x18"20" LxWxH?

And i apologize for all the questions/double posts and what not. Just don't really wanna screw this tank up.

Sounds pretty good to me :) EBJDs are meant to be a bit more laid back - I would go for Dwarf Neon Rainbows though - bigger school to calm the JD down due to them being smaller. You could probably get away with some more fish in there - though perhaps non cichlid just to be safe.

I really should call the store tomorrow to see what type of rainbows they have. In all honesty only ones i have seen around here are the turquoise but I haven't checked the one I think would carry the most variety.

Also with the more fish would a school of say buenos aires tetra work? Or would the JD be to aggressive for them?

No Buenos Aires Tetras are quite fiesty them selves and quite a robust fish - not sure how the Rainbows would get on with them though. In the most part the JD will ignore the schooling fish. The main thing will be with how the JD and Sev get on and it could just be down to individual fish and how the tank is set up.

well i would be planning on growing the sev out a little bit more before putting him in with another cichlid or really anything that could get mean with him. (He is under an inch long) and would preferably get the JD small as well. There will be some driftwood and fake planyt cover along with a large slate mountain/cave thing that my dad wanted that will hopefully be able to go into the center of the tank that should be a pretty good territorial marker/hide out cave for someone.

Edit some pics with a tape measure in the pic for size reference.

Nice bit of rock work :)

I would add them around the same time small is a good plan but when they both hit sexual maturity it does not make too much difference as it totally changes the fish and you never know whats really going to happen. The Sev should outgrow the JD though if they were added at the same size.

Thanks, most of it is glued together with GE silicon 1. So the severum should be able to hold its own should there be fighting? If nothing else I seperate them while they are small and find a new home i guess. Whats sexual maturity for these guys? about 3-4 inches?

Its more about age than size usually around 8 months or so, so closer to 6 inches for the Sev not sure what the JD will make in that time.

A Severum will hold its own against most fish they are not a squishy cichlid by any means. A Severum killed my Nicaraguan :( - the one in my DP

Oh that's how she (if i remember correctly) died, I read about your new one. Hopefully it wont get itself into to much trouble. :( if nothing else i can always go get a 10 dollar divider and divide them up till i find one or the other a home though should aggression break out.

Btw thank you for answering all of my patience trying questions. :)

I can only imagine how much my questions have already graded on your guys patience but i have a few more questions and would most appreciate responses from you guys who know far more about this stuff then I.

They are in reguards to stocking if i go with the EBJD or a JD.

Basically i have 3 stocking ideas and would like to know if these would work and if not which ones wouldn't work and why they wouldn't work.

1x Green Severum
1x EBJD/JD
1x BN Pleco
6x Buenos aires tetra (would something bigger boddied like congos work better?)
6x Rainbowfish (depending on the type i can find locally)

OR

1x Green Severum
1x EBJD/JD
1x BN Pleco
5x Angelicus/Yo Yo loach (would the JD be to aggressive for these loaches? If so do you know any that would remain small enough to be comfortable in this set up yet could deal with the JD?)
6x Rainbowfish (depending on the type i can find locally) (or some other kind of schooling fish more then open to suggestions)

OR
1x Green Severum
1x EBJD/JD
1x BN Pleco
1x Brown Ghost Knife (used to have both Clown and Black ghosts before and loved both. Wish i had a tank big enough to have kept my clown. :( and the local pet suppermarket has some in)
6x Rainbowfish (depending on the type i can find locally) (once again open to suggestion but not sure what is available in my area)
