Stocking A Sev Focused Tank

I am glad to see you opted out of getting a jewel. I just started reading this today and it was sounding a little like my tank lol. I have a Green Sev, Gold Sev, and a Jewel cichlid. While i would trust a jewel with the severums, I wouldn't have trusted one with the rest of your stock list. She would easily kill tetras and not even blink while doing it. I personally would get a few juvenile sevs and see if they pair up. They seem more active when they have a buddy.

The problem is i don't want to deal with a breeding pairs aggression with the rest of the fish. also a second severum would take up a lot of the tank space wouldn't it?

Ya while I love the look of a jewel cichlid I'm not gonna let it limit the stocking list as much as I feared it would. Ill just have to get a really big tank one day and do an aggressive community tank. :)

Also the rock work split the tank up nicely when i added it. (pics are from my camera phone so they are kinda crappy)

That would be cool to see. I am going to set up a 65g Demosani tank for my husband :p I wouldn't trust a demosani in a tank with other mbunas. I have 2 sevrums, a jewel, and a synodontis cat in a 75g. The tank seems empty now as all but the jewel are juvies. But even as juvies, the sevs have the jewel in her place. I tried to keep the jewel with my mbunas, but they didn't like her. I rehomed the sevs once becuase of the jewel, and ended up getting them back as they were bullies to my friend's fish. Now that the sevs are a little biggers, they hold their own.

Well my dad is in love with jag cichlids now and well i have always been in love with clown knife fish... Maybe when I get my own place and am out of college making some $$$ ill save up and have a 400-500 gallon built somewhere. :hyper:

Though a jewel would be to small to go in with either of these fish.

I looooove how you have yoru rocks setup :p Mine still needs a lot of work, but I do it little by little as I do not want to upset the fish.

My tank is cycling and it is all glued together with GE silicon 1 so they arent moving (with the exception of the 2 base pieces and the 2 top pieces) And i just checked and there is probably a section about 6 inches tall that is about 2-3 inches wide in the back so there should be more then enough room for the severum to get around it but it should also be good to keep line of sight limited and territory marker I'm guessing.

However you go, get the ebjd, way less aggressive than a regular jd. Looking good by the way.

1st stocking sounds the best maybe a few hoplos or something to keep the bottom clean. me personally identifiable go for one big group of dithers and they would have to be boesmanis or congos.

Thanks guys, though I'm feeling disheartned. Pretty much just had my mom yell at me for being stupid cause instead of putting incompatible fish together just cause they are pretty and not fully stocking the tank right away instead of cycling it. (Yep it was stupid to buy $2.50 bottle of ammonia and have some patience instead of watching $20-30 of fish die and the rest suffer) So im about to just wash my hands of the project.

NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!

Sit down with her and educate her on what your are doing. If she has an understanding of why, and how much money could potentially be tithered away if you didn't do this research, she may feel a little better about having patience.

Removed my rant, did some compromising since she is shelling out the cash. Think i might end up having to do a fish cycle to make her happy but will start with an incredibly low amount of fish. She also decided that it was "acceptable" to switch angelfish for silver dollars and well she is the boss. So now I wanna recheck my stocking list. (yet again :X )

1x Green Severum
1x Blue Acara
1x Bristlenose Plec
5x Angelicus/Yo Yo loach
6x Silver dollars (gonna try to get a smaller type)

Hi stocking looks fine :) If you can get spotty silver dollars do so as they do tay a little smaller than others.

Please please please ask your mum not to a fish in cycle it is so pointless. Did you mention you already have a tank up and running? You may be able to seed the new tank to get it up and running and significantly shorten your fishless cycle.

Try to sit her down and show her the begninners resource section.

No disrespect to you but just thinking your mum may think that this forum is just for "kids" however most of us are adults on the forum so what we bang on about is not just a game its a serious hobby and IMO choosing between fishless and fish in cycling is not a choice its just the best way....

I have seeded it with a filter cartridge from my 29 gallon tank. My family is just very impatient. I am too but I know it's worth the wait. It's been like 4 days and the ammonia in the tank is already dissipating, talked to her about it more and it now seems as if she is fine with allowing it to do a fishless cycle.

I think what it is is that her grandparents used to own a fish store and she has kept tanks for years but it's always been on buying fish till they survive and how pretty they look

-edit- Also as for the silvers I asked the local petsuppermarket if they could order metynnis lippincottianus since they only have redhooks buy the looks of things and also asked if they could get in the blue acara.

Update, Sev has been enjoying the tank the past few days and is really hard to track down at maybe an inch in size. Adding 7 Metynnis lippincottianus today. When i placed the bag in the tank my little guy decided he wanted to check them out. lol
