Hey everyone, new here and I need some advice.

I have had my current fish tank for 5 years or so, and it has done me well, but I need to get a new tank because all the fittings for the light are disintegrating, and we have discovered that buying a new tank is actually cheaper than getting a new lid/hood for the tank.
However, my parents want me to get a smaller tank, my current one being 60 litres, and we have been looking at this one.
I'm just wondering whether the fish I've got at the moment can live in this tank or whether it is too small for them?
the fish I have at the moment are: 1 Zebra Danio, 1 Black Neon, 1 Khuli loach, 2 Neon Tetras, 1 cherry Barb and 1 Rummy nose Tetra.
I know that these are al meant to be shoaling species, but this is what I have left from when the rest of each shoal dies out due to various reasons.
so yeah, like I said, I'm just wondering whether the fish I've got at the moment can live in this tank or whether it is too small for them?

None of those are appropriate for the smaller tank and several of them are not appropriate for the tank you have.

All of these have been fine since I have had them, and the last fish I brought was around 7 months ago. I know some are still gowing, but then some of them are already full size and have enough space to live.
Anyway, there are only 7 fish in there, and all apart from the khuli loach grow to less than 6cm long and if it is 2.5 cm of fish per 64cm of surface area, this means that I can have 70.3 cm of fish, which I think is a lot to much, an I only have 38cm of fish when they are all fully grown, which is only a little over half.
I know that the danio can be very active and requires a lot of swimming space but it never seems to use all of it now in this larger tank. I know that  smaller tank may restrict it's swimming a little, but he's the only one that is really active in the tanks upper third.

Anyway, what other fish is it that you think are not suited to the tank I have at the moment Attibones?

Remember that surviving is not thriving. It may be big enough for the fish to live in, but happily? No. Danios need to be in a four foot long tank minimum. Yeah sure, I had one in my 65L tank, but I could see it wasn't quite happy looking as it was stressed from being alone and from not having much space to move around in. What do you mean you can have 70cm of fish? That's not right at all.

Other fish you could have are betta for a start, it would provide a nice home for one. You'd want to make sure the tank's fully cycled before adding any new fish, though.

It was in one of my books on fish that said how to calculate how many fish you can safely have in an aquarium in comparison to the total surface area, and as I said, I know that it cant be right.

Also, the Danio is fine, and to be honest I have had it for two years in the tank, and he has always seemed happy.

Also as for cycling, the water from the old tank, along with all the filter media from the pump and all the gravel and décor will be going into the new tank. I can't really do a full cycle either as I only have space for one tank, so I am transferring everything over

What are the dimensions of your tank?

Going by just the size, though, I agree with Attibones. The zebra danio, black neon tetra, and rummynose tetra are not suitable for your current tank. As Ashley said, surviving is not thriving.
There are many people that put goldfish or bettas in bowls and claim they're happy..that doesn't make it right or true. I know that your tank is no where close to a bowl though.

None of them would be suitable in that smaller tank, the ones that are suitable for your current one (cherry barbs, khuli loaches, neon tetras) are at their absolute minimum requirement already.

These all also need groups of 6+, which you already know. I would definitely not get that smaller tank, I'd actually look at upgrading if possible or re-homing some of your fish.

I'm sorry for sounding negative but our main concern is the well being of your fish.
May I be nosy and ask why you're parents want a smaller tank? It's easier to maintain larger ones, in terms of fluctuations in water chemistry and temperature, etc.

That stocking calculator is a new one on me. Just as poor as the other ones, mind.

Yeah, a 48l tank is not really big enough for any of the species you currently have.

danios despite often being said to survive in 10 gallon tanks generally require allot of swimming space 3ft long tanks minimum and also require shoals of 4 but will do better in shoals of 6 plus.
to be perfectly honest i would suggest starting over following a non fishless cycling method theyre are loads on this forums just search it up once oyu have done this i would recommend a shoal of 6:neon tetras, mosquito rasboras ,male guppys, galaxy rasbora, lambchop rasbora, neon green rasbora.or 8 male endlers guppys. plus one of these liquorice gourami l, dwarf gourami, honey gourami, sparkling gourami, scarlet badis

the fish in bold you will most likely have to ask your local lfs to order in for your if it is pets at home i doubt they will be able to do this for you since they're such a large company but it may be worth a try if you want to keep dwarf gourami liquorice gourami honey gourami scarlet badis with guppys or endlers then i woul recomend buying the gourami/badis then just to make sure it is timid enough put one guppy/endler with it to make sure it is all ok hope you found this helpful if any plants advice is needed i know a bit (were talking a little bit here) about plants but maybe try asking one of thes moderators they know allot about fish and plants

My parents want me to get a smaller tank because they think that for the amount of fish I have, it is not worth getting another tank of the same size or larger. I have tried multiple times to explain to them why I would need a larger tank, but to no prevail.

And also the danio and the neon I understand about, but the rummynose?

My local fish shop has some of these species already, but my parents won't buy any more fish at the moment, just a new tank, and I'm saving my money for other stuff that I had already planed for, so have none to spend to start all over with new fish.

ok but all of those fish are viable for that tank in those numbers and will thrive in those numbers as long as everything else is kept tin check

The rummynose tetras get 2" and are quite active so that is why they need a larger tank as well. Perhaps show your parents some info on the fish? Seriouslyfish is a good resource for this. :)

So you don't reckon that the rummynose would last long, even in the tank they're in now?

I'm not saying it will die, just that it's quality of life will not be as good. They need more room to swim and groups to feel comfortable.

Well it's been alright for the last five years, and it doesn't use that much of the tank to swim in. It normally just rests near the back of the tank, within the plastic plants.
