Still Baffled How To Get Rid Of My Hair Algae

Shrimp are your best defence against thread type algae, but you need lots. Id want 30 to 40 in 120lt.

Sam

Try the followin steps to control the thread algae.
First take the bogwood out and soak it in mild bleach 1:20 for about 5mins, then clean it thoroughly in clean water to remove all traces of bleach. This will kill all algae on the wood.
Add filter wool to your water filter as this will catch any algae spores which have been leftover.
Do water changes every week (25%) for the next couple of weeks.
Add more fast growing plants like hornwort which produce algae inhibitors.
Add a few algae eating fish like mollys, shrimp, SAE etc.

And yes, increasing nitrate actually helps kill off the algae!

hey buddy well i have a 600 ltr planted aquirium with haliod lighting and co2 i found this to be a good key to limit algae

1.. seachem exel (thats a product ) and it slowly gets rid of black beard algae
2..limit lighting to 6-8 hours a day
3..a ph of 6.8
4.. a kh of 4-6
5..regular maintainace of canister filter
6..growing fast growing plants maby val..(this will help compete with algae)
7..the use of chemical filtraion (i use seachem phous gaurd)
8..regular water changes and vacume carfully.
9..try out some different fertilizers i use seachem flourish complete and i also use iron and potassium but i have also herd that sera has a great fertilizer as well .
10.feed fish in the morning be sure all food is consumed within 30secs to a min once a day and miss out feeding once or twice a week the fish will genarally clean the tank a bit for u.
11.. be sure tank is out of sunlight
12..if a drastic measure is needed then JBL agrol or is it algol should be used and monitior ur plants the use of oxygen may be required when using the product when algae dies it leeches oxygen from the water..
13.good luck man hope it goes well for you dont know if that was much help :good:

What fertiliser are you using? Plants need Nitrogen, Potassium, Phosphate, Magnesium and trace elements.

High concentrations of these do not CAUSE algae. In fact algae with thrive in low levels of nutrients but your plants will not. Same with light. Stick to an 8 hour photoperiod.

Remove as much algae as possible, do 50% minimum w/c and dose Flourish excel. Dose excel everyday and do another w/c after a few days. Doing only this without dosing adequete ferts and lighting will not sort your algae problems for good though.

instead of multiple 20% water changes, do a couple of 40-60% water changes 3 days apart. That will help reduce excess nutrients that the algae is feeding on.

This is what i did/ do:

1) physically remove as much as possible
2) do a large 50% w/c
3) overdose excell or easycarbo by 3times but gradually (see below)
4) do another 50% w/c every other day for 1week

overdose excell on day1 by 1x, then overdose on day2 by 2x then day then by 3x on day3 carry on overdosing by 3x until algae is gone, once i have dosed 5x over the reccomendation.

Good luck :good:

This hair algae will keep coming back if you do not dose adequetely. Excel will try to treat the result, but will not treat the cause.

KH does not matter, pH does not really matter. Tom Barr has shown that a siesta does not much and can actually be bad for plants. Just set the photoperiod to a solid 10 hours.
