Hi.... I'd love to get a pair of guppies and have some babies! :*)

What size tank would be best for a pair of guppies? And when do you put them in a separate tank to stop the mummy's eating them? :p

Ahhhh I just love guppies... what other fish do they get along with? Or should they be alone in a tank?

Thanks!

Best to have more females then male Guppys 2 to 1.
With only 1 female she would get stressed by the male guppy following her all the time.
With 2 females one can have a kit-kat now and then. :D

 Typical males eh? :p

Ok, thanks for that, I shall get two girlies and a boy.

What's the minimum size tank that they can stay in?

Cheers

Hi Salli,

I personally would put 3 females to 1 male, this would stop them being harrassed so much by the males..

If you want to have babies you should have at least a ten gallon tank so that the guppy fry will have room when they grow up. If you don't want to have any fry you could just go with males. Guppies are a great community fish. They get a long with a lot of different species. Don't try keeping guppies with large fish like angelfish or discus though because they could get eaten. Some other good community fish are dwarf gouramis, cory cats, other livebearers like platies and swordtails and most tetras. If you want to have a community tank don't go smaller than a ten gallon tank (although a twenty would be better). If you want to just have a couple nice male guppies you could go with one of those 3 gallon Eclipse Explorer tanks. The explorer tank has a built in filter that makes it a little easier on beginners. I got one for my girlfriend and its worked out fine for her guppy.

I'm starting out with guppies, too. Had 3 batches of babies so far. I have two 5 gallon tanks, one for the adults, and one for the babies. I really like the Aqua-tech series of tanks. The filter is built in to the cover and the only other thing you need is a heater. The bio-wheel filter works great, keeps the tank clean and no algae problems so far. I did have one problem with the babies early on-I lost a few getting sucked up in the filter. I cut a piece of pantyhose big enough to cover the filter intake and secured it with a rubber band. It works wonderfully. I have to clean it every few days to keep the water flow at peak efficiency. But no more casualties!

;) Thanks for the great info.

I'm looking forward to getting some guppies, and might get a community tank started with some male guppies like suggested.. just to start off. :)

What other fish do well in a community tank with guppies? :look:

I think I might get two tanks.. one as a community tank, and one for guppy babies later on. B)
