Quick question...anybody know where on this site the article is about LR? I cant find it!!! Driving me mad.

Im trying to figure out A. If i want to do fish only or not and B. How much LR i would need for the new tank

Hey sorry about not replying! glad your sorted! im not very good at spellings so tend not to type much  but i do try to help when i can :good:

The LR Calulator is under "aquarium calculator" but when you click it doesnt seem to be working at the min

Even tho you found your tank mine is Aqua One Windsor 88

Dimensions Tank: 88w x 88D x 70 H cm
Dimensions Cabinet: 88W x 88D x 76H cm

You could also use reef bones. Theres a great german supplier ( i will try and get you the link ) thats ships direct to you.

Reef bones is dried out live rock. This is a lot more pourus than ocean/base rock so will eventually be home to more bacteria. Most people who use this rock have a small amount of live rock in their tank aswel which speends up the seeding of the reef bones.

This rock does need a bit of curing. a good scrub and a soak in RO water. But its cheaper than live rock and better/more attractive than ocean/base rock.
Another advantage of going this route is the fact that the shapes and sizes of the pieces are usually fantastic for aqua-scaping. Plus they are dry so you can make you structures on the kitchen table easily with capbe ties, rods and reef putty.
I will go down this route next time, but you do have to stock extreamly slowly.

Cheers for that ben i will have a look into it.

Ok so am now really close to getting the tank. With a bit of luck this time next week i will be awaiting delivery :)

If i get the tank i am after, its coming with a sump, skimmer and heater. So im guessing my next purchase is sand?

Would i get away with addnig the sand from my tropical at the bottom and then covering with crushed arogonite? Just wondered if the bacteria in the sand would help (or hinder maybe)

Cheers

i wouldnt, keep marine stuff and fresh water seperate.
for the next thing, look at what flow you have when the tank gets there. powerheads may be the best next purchase. I put my sand in after the live rock so the rock had a firm base. You dont want a fish to burrow under the rocks and cause a rock slide thatc racks the glass or kills somthing. You have salt and test kits to buy too

Ok cheers mate, thats enough for me to go with for now! haha ill update you all soon, probably next week with pics.

Hi all,

Bit of an update for you!! I have taken delivery of my new tank

I now have an Aquaone Windsor 88. Hoooowever, the tank arrived with an incomplete stand! There is no lid, so i basically have a tank and no stand! Cant have it without a lid so im shafted really.

Looking into building my own but it wont be easy as i its a curver stand! So just had a though, i wonder if i could buy just a stand? Does anybody know a good place to start looking?

Cheers

lol are you sure?? haha

Ive checked ebay, got no chance. Ill try getting hold of aqua one and see what they can do for me.

No need to get personal is there? lol. Ive apologised for being a bit arsey which was purely down to frustration.

To me, the stand is incomplete without the lid...i agreed to buy a tank with stand which included the lid mate thats all ive been trying to say.

Could we just try to sort this out please mate? I want to get cracking!! lol. Im a really impatient person and was just frustrated i couldnt get cracking straight away. Again, i apologise for my attitude throughout the messages and agree with you that i was fully in the wrong moaning about the other stuff

Anyhow all, an update for the journal...

I have ordered the cam dowels and locks i needed for the stand (the other ones went brittle which is understandable because of the condensation from the sump). So with a bit of luck they will arrive today or tomorrow and i can get the stand and tank up. Tank is all clean and ready to go and looks great, soooo much bigger than i was expecting, ill put pics up later if i can get a good shot of it, its on the floor at the min

Gary, if you can get back to me as soon as poss that would be great, cheers mate

Not yet mate, gotta get over the first hurdle yet and get the stand up! had a message from the place i bought the cam dowels and locks from yesterday saying they had been dispatched so hopefully they will arrive today. So when i get home from work ive gotta go B&Q and get a drill bit the right size to expand the holes (the only cam locks i can get are slightly bigger than the holes in the wood of the stand)

Once ive done all that it will take me about 10 mins to throw this stand together, then its a case of getting the tank up on the stand, plumbing in the sump and hopefully hearing from Gary so that i can get hold of the lid for the tank.

I need to re-read the articles on lighting etc so that i can make a decision. I was thinking about starting as FOWLR then moving onto Corals etc when ive got the hang of things (and a bit more cash for halides)....am i thinking along the right lines?

sounds orite yeah, dont spend much on the first set of lights though, you dont want to be shelling out a fair bit of money twice
