Homebase is the best place to get the ammonia from. You can use flakes but its not recommended as you have no way of effectively measuring how much each flake affects the water stats as every flake will be different in size therefore making it hard to judge how many flakes to put in each time

Hiya Andy. I know that fish flakes arent ideal, but i dont want to stall the cycling process so for the moment I have added very few flakes until I can get hold of some ammonia. I have ahome base near me so ill pop in there ASAP!

also try boots if your homebase doesn't have ut

yes certainly add some fish flakes to sustain things for now.

Hello again!,

I have managed to find a bottle of Ammonia from homebase (i tried three stores!) I'm going to pick it up tonight, but can someone tell me what I am meant to look for? I know the ingredients should simply read: Water and Ammonia (i think?) and should not have any dyes or chemicals added...can someone advise me if I should look for anything else!? Cheers

it should have no scent and when you shake it it shouldn't foam up, you may get bubbles like if you'd shaken a bottle of water up but not any foaming like you'd get if you shook up some chemicals.

it will be called something like 'pure household ammonia' and is usually in the cleaning isle.
