My take on it is that it's pretty obvious that spraying aerosols etc near a tank isn't a good idea and is best avoided, regardless whether it has been scientifically proven as bad for the fish or not.
It's impossible to estimate with any accuracy how bad for the fish it could be, but I would bet at least some of those 'mystery deaths' out there have been caused by air-bourne pollutants such as deoderants, hairsprays, cigarette smoke, air fresheners etc.
As Andy points out, probably nobody has been able to directly attribute fish deaths to being caused by such things, but this is most likely because the average fishkeeper has no way to test for it.
I don't think it would be unreasonable to assume, in the absence of any evidence one way or another, that it probably doesn't do the fish much good, and therefore should be avoided where possible (especially where open-top tanks are concerned).
Better safe than sorry.
