I some gorgeous guppies marked as "pintail" guppies today. I couldn't resist them, even at £5 a pair :*) But on investigation I'm not so sure they really are pintail and I'm thinking they are actually spadetails.
What do you guys think ?

I know this doesn’t help at all as I haven’t go a clue if they are pintail or spadetail, but I just wanted to say that I think they look lovely whatever they turn out to be :D

What a fantastic addition to any tank

Thanks a lot Claire :D I'm hoping I'll soon have some more £5 swimming around in my tank - especially judging by the look of the female

It looks like he has a small point on the end, so I would say Spear-tail....but I can't tell, as it could just be the way he's swimming. Try looking on here, and seeing which one he resembles most: http://guppyplace.tripod.com/Tails.html

He really is gorgeous though. Was the female in a tank with just those kind of Guppies? If so, there is a good chance you'll get some of those kind of tailed fry. Though it may not be as pronounced. :)

Thanks for that link Annastasia. I "think" he's a spear tail and most certainly not a spade tail - so I've amended my original post. There were about 20 of these pairs in a tank completely of their own so I'm assuming they came from a breeder who kept these on their own, so should be pure - whatever they are....I'll try and get some better pics over the weekend - these were just some very quick snaps. :)

It's quite exciting really as I used to keep Endlers and Guppies for years but haven't for a long long time. So I'm looking forward to seeing some fry :D

Yeah, I figured he wasn't a spade tail seeing as they seem to have fuller tails, and No point. If he point gets pretty long over time, he may become a Pintail, but for now I think he's a spear-tail. :)

Hopefully they are pure...it'd be nice to have more of the fancier shorter tail types around...you'll have to keep us updated on them!

Well I was just thinking I should give the tank a clean today and as I looked across to the tank on my desk - I spotted fry ! :hyper:
The female was only teensy tiny so I didn't really expect her to have more than 3 or so, but she gave birth to 4 little brutes :flex:
But greedy mom as she is, she tried to eat them :grr: (as I know they do!) so I quickly nabbed them out of the tank and put them in a separate clean glass with some tank water and a tiny plant. I will go and get a fry net tomorrow - I thought I had one, but can't find it :dunno: or i might put in a divider in grow them out there.

Anyway, here are some piccies. In the second pic, the spine isn't bent - it's just the angle. And there's another little chap right at the bottom too.
Can't wait to see what they grow up to look like ! :D
