Spawn Journal

This is exciting :hyper:

Good luck, I hope that dad turns out to be pro. ;)

And the pictures are AMAZING, btw.

Well not going well at all. The Dad has eaten most of the eggs and isn't doing anything to help the 40-50 eggs still in the nest this morning. Most of the bubbles are gone so the eggs are just floating on the water surface under the cup. I imagine the Dad will eventually eat the last of the eggs before they have a chance to hatch.

I could just take the Dad out, but at this point I'd rather just start over, it was his first spawning, so I'll give him another chance or 2 to get it right.

If any do hatch I'll let you know, but I'm not expecting anything at this point :(

Update Friday 10:15am:

Well I decided to pull out what eggs were left (about 30 or so) and put them in a small tank with just an inch of water. Basically, if a few did hatch and survive, I didn't want them in the main spawn tank for just that few of fish as I'll want that tank to try another spawn soon. I figured it would be easier to get the eggs than to catch the teeny tiny fish after they hatch, hehe. I'm not truely expecting any to hatch at this point, so if any do it will be a bonus. Dad was continueing to eat the eggs anyway, so I figured any babies that did hatch would shortly get eaten.

I've tried looking at the eggs in a magnifying glass and can't really see anything to tell me they are fertilized and alive, although I thought I saw one move, but it may have just been my imagination.

IF any do hatch they should start sometime after 2:00pm. I'll update if there is a change or tomorrow and let you know the outcome.

Yea, especially since I'm 2 years past due for new glasses, hahahaha

OK, I just got home and there are some hanging fry in the little tank. Maybe as many as 10, although a couple can't keep themselves at the surface of the water, so they'll die I'm sure.

I've eye droppered out the unhatched eggs to help keep fungus from forming, I've also added PimaFix for the same reason.

Now to see if any make it to free swimming which could be as early as tomorrow or maybe as late as Monday (depends on when they actually hatched, which I don't know). I'll update when there is a change.

The toughest little babies! :hyper: :flex: :flex: :flex:

I wish you and the babies the best of luck and I hope they do well. I've been kinda gone for two days so I hadn't even seen this, the pictures are amazing! Keep us updated on the little ones

Well I just took a quck peek after being gone since yesterday and I saw at least 1 more still hanging and alive, saw a few on the bottom I'm assuming are dead but haven't had a chance to confirm. So doubtful I'll get anything out of this. :(

I'll keep my fingers crossed for the little one, and I hope you find more survivors :flex:

OK, it's now Monday afternoon and there are still some hanging fry and maybe one who is becoming free swimming, so by tomorrow they should all be free swimming IF they're going to become free swimming. I'm a little surprised they aren't already, however they aren't as warm as my previous spawns since the little tank isn't heated, it's just in the heated fish room. So that is probably slowing them down a bit, which might be a good thing, it will help them be a bit stronger when they do become free swimming. Next update will be Tuesday afternoon, hehe.
