OK, I hadn't posted until now as I wanted to be sure they would spawn...well they just started, so here goes:

This is a cross between a very nice ST Steel male from a Steel/Black cross for the Ibarra line and a female Turquoise from Alfredo Gonzalez lines. A spawn should produce 100% Royal Blue fry.

I put them in the spawn tank yesterday (Wedensday) with the female being released from the chimney at 10am. The male worked on the bubblenest sporadically after releasing the female, spending most of his time flaring for her and looking for her.

7:20am Thursday morning: They just started embracing as I was in the room getting ready to feed everyone...she was in the opposite corner and he was working on the nest and she just swam over and nudged him, about 20 seconds later they had their first embrace. No eggs yet of course (as it takes a few trys before they come, at least from what I've seen in past spawns). If all goes as my past spawns they will continue for 2-5 hours.

I'll update when I get home from an appointment in about 3 hours.

Update at 11:30am (times are all PST):

I just got home and they are under the nest wrapping and a bunch of eggs up in the nest. Their wraps don't seem to last too long though (like I've seen other spawns) so I'm hoping he's getting them fertilized, only time will tell. They are collecting all the eggs though, so that's a good sign. This is the Dad's first spawn and the females 2nd or 3rd.

I took some pictures of the wrappings, so I'll upload them to the webshots album and let you know when they're there.

OMG! I just saw them do a wrap that resulted in at least 50 eggs being released!! I've seen alot of wraps in past spawns and have never seen more than 15 eggs come out at once, but this one there was TONS! There are alot of eggs in the nest right now and they're still going strong, so it appears it's going to be a very large spawn, WOO HOO!! :)

I've uploaded pictures of them wrapping, they don't appear to be coming up yet, sometimes it takes webshots a little while for them to show up, but they'll be there eventually if you click on the link above in my other post.

how are you guys so good? i guess none of my bettas wanna do it. and i was very patient. great job and i hope your spawn is really big! go bettas!!

I have had many spawn attempts that led to nothing too, you just need to keep trying with different pair matchups I guess. I knew this female wouldn't be a problem as I've spawned her before but the male was new so I wasn't sure about him. But obviously there's no problem with him. Of course there's still a ways to go before I have fry, but so far so good :)

12:11pm: They may be done, she just swam away from the nest and runs away from him when he tries to go near her. But I'll leave her in another half hour to be sure as I've had a female that would take a break after a while, only to go back to spawn some more. So I'll be sure before taking her out.

The pictures are now showing up in the webshots album, so you can go there and see the pics of the pair and of them embracing.

I'm so sorry for making you repeat yourself... I was even looking at them earlier! I'm extremely excited for you! I hope you have 100000000x fries! I can't wait to see their progress!

Lol, no worries Tek :)

It does appear that they are done, she's off hiding in the Java Moss and he's tending to the nest, rearranging it and looking for stray eggs (there were a few floating along the top of the water out of the nest, Lol.

Once I see her in an easy to get to spot, I'll try and net her, I don't want to disturb the nest too much trying to catch her.

I would say there are 150+ eggs in the nest and probably over 200, it's just so hard to tell, but definetly a largish spawn.

I'll update again tomorrow when they start to hatch, probably about 2:00pm PST they will start.

Update: Well I got the mom out without too much trouble, she's in her Bettamax bath now, but not much damage, so she won't need to be in it long.

There's still alot of eggs in the nest, but the Dad isn't really tending to it, he's over resting in the java moss with an awefully full tummy, and I didn't feed him, so hmmm, wonder what the little monster has been eating? hehehe

I'm hoping he's just resting up for the big day tomorrow and isn't going to turn out to be a dud dad. The nest could use some work though, so I hope he doesn't rest too long.
