Sophos9 - Diy "poor Mans" Reef Cooling

Ordered the ATC800 with 220x150mm abs enclosure, 3core cable, 3 x cable glands, 2 x double trailing sockets, plug.

Will pop some photos up when its arrived and being fitted!!

Hehe, good, I was just gonna suggest something similar. Mercifully DC temperature and fan control is relatively simple electrically and there are many options out there. Icecap makes a 120mm DC fan with temp controller and thermistor built into it for a mere $20some. Too bad AC motor control is so complicated :(

I control a/c motors with no problem at all pity there 3phase monsters and cost a small fortune !

Back to the subject the atc800 is a great bit of kit not only controlling the fans but also the heater and there tried and tested just dont forget to set the stat on your heater higher than you need so the atc switches it, i suppose it also will stop the heater if it sticks on as your cutting the power to it and if the atc goes wrong the stat on the heater kicks in

Sure, thanks.... I've been thinking about that and what an failsafe the atc800 combined with a thermostatic heater!! Thats another worry off my mind!

I've decided to copy you on this one - ordered the stuff for it last week and it's arrived today! I'm looking forward to getting it all hooked up and getting it going! No cooling as of yet but I'm going to get a chiller before [if] it gets warm next year so it'll be good to be prepared.

Nice one! I'm expecting mine any day (today?). Did you buy the additional box and cable glands? I got them from Farnell in the end, much cheaper. In my 180, 1 PC cooling fan can bring the temp down 3dC!

I bought the box, glands, cables, etc. from maplins.. I found a guide someone wrote on another forum about wiring them up (is that what you've been looking at?) so I just went through their parts list. Electrics DIY isn't exactly my strong point but I'm hoping this will help me improve a bit.. Needless to say, I'll be coming here with any problems I encounter!

Sure you will be fine, I'm more than happy to help out if you like. I'm wiring mine into 2 x double sockets (as in the same thread you read?) This will allow me to choose what I plug in.

Just remember that live mains goes to 9 then a link wire from 9 to 1 and 3. All neutrals to 8 and the live from the heater socket to 1, cooling socket to 3

Should work fine!

Sounds like we're both looking at the same thread.. From the looks of it, it should be pretty easy to hook up but I'm ever the pessimist. I'll manage to do something wrong and make life hard for myself believe me!

Well only half the stuff came from maplins and of course the missing bits would be the most vital and stop me being able to do anything tonight; the cord and the box to put the unit in!

Out of interest, since our cabinets are pretty much the same, where in your cabinet (or outside it?) are you planing on mounting yours? In the cabinets there aren't many good positions with it not having wood at the back and I'm considering putting it outside the cabinet or on the wall behind it. I'm toying with the idea of it inside the cabinet door, too. Ohh so many options!

I'm sorry you did not get all the bits... I did and 1.5hrs later, its all done and actually working first time (which is amazing for me)

I'm just leaving it where it is for the time being, may end up hanging on the inside, side panels.... Anyway pictures speak louder than my rubbish so here goes

Bummed out... Checked the controller this morning and part of the LED temperature display has failed leaving a 2 looking like some alien sign.

Not a good initial sign, I have read loads of good reviews about this unit!!

Have contacted monitors-direct.com to see how this can be resolved, what a pain in the ass - gonna have to pull it apart again now :grr:
