No it was given to me by my brother-in-law. He bought it for his snake tank but never used it.

I'm sorry that you lost so many of your fish. It seems even more difficult not knowing why. Maybe you should just keep your tank status quo for a bit and see how the remaining fish do. If time passes and they seem okay, then you may not need to break down the tank and start over. Just a thought.
