hi, i have never had a betta before and will be buying one after x-mas, he will be going into a planted 5.5 gallon

my questions are,

do i need a filter? there is one at the petshop that does 60 lph would that be good?

should the tank be heavily planted, or sparsely planted?

if there are any more info i need to know could you please tell me?

thanks

i have a tiny bowl, 24 oz mabye?! it's happy with just marbles at the bottom.

I had my Betta in an 11 gallon with a filter and he hated it so I kept water changes to every other day and left it of. I wanted the tank to house my neons as they were not happy with the platties and he has gone in an 31 gallon with platties with a filter and is very happy. I get the usuaual greetings and he eats non stop. I feed twice a day and they are all very happy. I must admit I have the filter on the lowest setting possible.

In the UK yes as they are used to tropical tanks. It runs on less than a penny a day and I therfore think beneficial. Drafts can give pneumonia to your Betta so its best to keep an even temperature as possible. This is subjective of course only imo.

You could you a sponge filter with an air pump.. They are great for Betta's and not too expensive.

Sponge filters a great for bettas, i made up my own to go in my Barracks as i needed 6, but they are cheap to buy. Your betta will love to have a heavily planted tank it will give him lots of places to explore. They are very inquizative (sp) so the more to investigate the happier they are plus imo a nicely planted tank looks beautifal.

Be sure to get us some pics when you get him :good:

ok thanks everyone!if i can get some money soon i might have to go and get one, my lfs has all glass 5.5 gallons for 19.99 each right now ill have to do some work around the house but i think i can do that in a few weeks :good:

i will deffenitly add some picks when i get him!

Its worth asking what they have been fed on wherever you buy your betta..
Mine don't eat flake food and i don't think many of them will.. I feed Atisons betta or Pro which they all eat and i feed brine shrimp bloodworm or daphinia every few days...
Personal choice though at the end of the day.. :D
