Hi

i just recently got 5 small albino corys for my 25 gal, theyre currently living with one goldfish

i was only gonna get 3 but the deal at my lfs is that if you get 4 fish of the same species you get another one free.
so i got 5.

theyre all relly small compared to the other ones, and only 3 of them stick together and the rest are left on other sides of the tank,

should i get one more so they will all school?

and also, i m getting preety attached to these guys so i ws wondering how many more corys could i get?

The goldfish will just not do in that tank. I would have thought that being with us for so long would have shown you that tropicals and cold water fish should not be kept together, if possible. (Don't take offense, but this is basic information that we chant as the newbies come pouring in)

As for getting more, you could definitely do that. Some people on these forums would suggest an all-cat tank, which, IMO, is ok, though that means no fish in the strata above the substrate...

Would you like to get more albinos or some other species as well?

umm, it doesnt have a heater in the tank, goldfish can live in a 20 gal for one and ryan said albinos would be okay in a coldwater tank. so i thought it would be fine. -_-

but now i got 3 bronze corys in with my goldie and moved me 5 albinos into my 40 gal woith my dwarf cichlids

so i was just wondering how many more corys can i have in the 25 gal
because i dont wanna stock my 40 with anymore corys at the moment

Depends on the kind of Goldfish. Some species literally outgrow the length of a 30 gallon tank let alone live in a 20. Only the smaller varities can safely go in a 20 gallon.

For a 40 gallon, you could do as many as 20 or so Cories provided you had the space and proper hiding for them but you'll probably want to stick to less than 10 since there are other fish in there and it's probably not set up for Cories.

it actually is set up for corys, suprisingly.

i just switched to sand and i made alot of caves with assorted rocks, it kinda looks like a mbuna set up

the corys are liek the dominant group that stand out in the tank because i have, 2 checkerd rainbows, 2 keyholes, 2 rams,1 african butterfly and 1 checkerboard cichlid so should i get another 5 corys?

as for the 25 gal, the goldfish was sold as a feeder gold fish which was probably to become oscar food. so i really dont think he'll out grow my tank atm, as he grows, ofcoarse ill move him. so i got 3 corys in there now, so how many more can i get?

Hi dwarf_dude :)

There are exceptions to every rule and keeping corys with goldfish is one of them.

I will assume that you know how to manage the conditions necessary to keep a goldfish happy and healthy and just talk about your corys here. So, the most important question to ask, IMO, is just how cold is your cold water tank? And how much does the temperature fluctuate?

C. aeneus, either bronze or albino and C. paleatus (peppered cory) are the corys that will do well with goldfish, with the peppered corys able to live well in even cooler conditions than the aeneus.

Perhaps the biggest problem you might encounter with that combination is that goldfish are voracious eaters who also scour the bottom in search of food bits. They are competitive with the corys in this area, so you will want to take extra care to ensure that the corys receive a good sized portion of food, and that they are able to eat it before the goldfish gets it.

Depending on your filtration, and your willingness to do extra water changes as time goes by, I think you could safely add 4 or maybe even 5 corys to the tank. As the goldfish grows, just increase the frequency and amount of water changes until you are able to relocate him to bigger quarters. :D

Hi Inchworm :flowers:

the temp atm in my tank is 20 degrees celcius which i heard was a good temp for goldfish, please correct if im wrong

i now only realized that i do have pepperd corys in my 25 gal no Bronze corys :*) :X
when i watch my goldfish and corys they seem to play follow the leader and except the goldfish to their school
i say this because when ever the corys find something to much on or dig into the goldfish comes to the same place as soon as they leave, and the same in reverse

i do water changes every four days on that tank sometimes every 3 because of the goldfish waste that shows on the sand.and i have a really good filter for it that does its job.

Hi dwarf_dude :)

Twenty degrees C. comes to only about 68 F., so it's a little too cool for C. aeneus, but the peppered corys will do well.

Definitely get some more if you can. These corys are prolific breeders and they will most likely spawn for you. You can save the eggs or not, as you choose. :D
