So Its Begins! The Tank Is Empty And Ready To Go

i think i will have to go for the softie/ few hards tank setup

so 20/30 do you think?

or can i get the 30/40 setup, ready for if i ever want hard's?

yep, good idea

so then, powerheads.how many of what do i need?

you could go for 2 magnum 7 and a smaller one the 7s would give you 20000 or so and then the smaller one adds a bit on top - you would be talking about £260 - there are a couple on ur for a £100 each at the moment. or you could give the polario a shot - i wish i had got the smaller one, the 15000 and then added a korallia. That would cost about the same. or then there are the streams. Go take a look around, look at flow rater per hour and cost - with pumps you get what you pay for but you can pick up second hand bargains

i would love 1 which has the settings so you can slow it on feeding times and other things. there probaly expensive though?

The Polario, Vortech or some streams are controllable - but imo the polario and some also say the vortech are noisy as they click from one setting to the next. And yes, they are more expensive. I think I would go for either the streams or koralias, your size tank will need three

also by the way,i may have 2 mce600's,so 1 will be up for sale soon,my gf picked 1 up for me 2nd hand when she visited her parents

You have a great girlfriend there, better to hang on to her :good:

ok going by the 40 x 400 16000 you gave me

i have had a look, could i have 2 korilia magnums (6 or 7) at the 2 front corners facing down

that will give me 21000 on the 7's or 17000 on 6's

would that be good enough?

i though about also getting a smaller powered 1 to run down the back of the tank?

I'd go with the 6's, cause you're adding a skimmer and an external to that flow potential and that's a decent amount.

excellent,saves me abit of cash,lol

im not very clued up on phos removing things for marine,i used to use clearmax on my tropical setup, and it was usless!!

what decent brand (that works) can i use to battle the phos? and how much would i need for my 400L

so 2 magnum 6's will be ok?

i was thinking to have them at both front top corners, facing inwards blowing down, and then my fx5 blowing down the back.

that sound ok?

sounds good, consider buying a smaller powerhead to have breaking up the surface water - i have a k4 doing the job

hey seffie

thanks for all the help,

actualy thanks to everyone on this thread that has commented with my silly newb questions

i purchased 2 realy good books yesterday that has already taught me alot, but theres along way to go!!

i just purchased another juwel t5 light unit,3 piece flap set and 4 reflectors,so i will have 4 T5's on the go when setup.

what bulbs are advised? 2 marine white and 2 blue?

im going to have to put the spending on equipment on hold for a week or so,as my cash flow is very bad.

im currently breaking down my tropical setup and i should have a bit of cash for that.

i think the live rock is going to be the biggest payout!!

cant belive £380 for 40kg of rock

so now i have here:

400 juwel tank
2 x juwel T5 light units and 3 piece flap set
fluval fx5 external
d+d salt
d+d refractometer
mce600 skimmer

just need them:

powerheads (when i can decide,lol)
test kits
gravel
live rock

is there anything that im missing/overlooked?

im very worried about my ph,what should the aim of ph be? i read 8.2,is that correct?

hello

P.H from what i know should be between 8 and 8.5 so 8.2 is good the coral gravel and rock will help to keep this stable..

£380 sounds expensive for live rock... if you go onto Ultimate reef or aquarist classified just find someone who is breaking there tank down and you should be able to find it very cheaply on there..
i sold 20kg of Live rock the other day for £20 as i needed the space.. lol

theres always someone out there to get a bargain from.. dont buy from fish shop if ur finances are bad.. lol

u forgot to mention u have a protein skimmer.. if i remmeber correctly.

problem with live rock,is if you buy it from online, you dont no what pieces you are getting.

going to the lfs you can choose, but you have you have to pay for that privalage, lol

oh yeah!! i just added the skimmer.

Really wait for someone close to you who is breaking a tank down, you will then get rock at £5 a kilo and probably better as well

:fish:

how you going to fix the two t5 i bars on the tank with the MCE 600?

i will cross that bridge when i get there.

theres always a way,but i no what your saying. with the 2 i bars there will not be big enough space between them to fit the mce 600. i have thought of this.

maybe put the skimmer on the back?

That is what i was going to originally do - but you really need to be able to see through the back to ensure you are getting the bubbles you need - but saying that, i suppose if you just keep trying until it goes right then you will be ok

:fish:

do you want me to take a picture to show you what i mean? Took one anyway

ps did you buy a new i bar or second hand?

i just bought the bar brand new.didnt want to risk it with a juwel bar,as mine has broken twice under warranty luckily!!!

i dont like the thought of having the skimmer on the side, looks strange,so maybe on the back.

if i cant sort by having it on the back, deltec do any internal dont they?

regarding the bubbles how do you adjust it anyway? i havent go no instructions with mine, and i havent read up about it yet!! there is only 2 ways to adjust it isnt there. by either moving cup up and down, and that red tap on the end of that vacuum pipe.

what does adjusting either do?

The skimmer will be fine at the back, it's just I like to see the bubbles, yes, I know I am mad................

Go to the bottom of the page and you can download the instructions :good:

The box on the top should be as high as possible, so that you still get a skim but it is fairly dry skim as opposed to a lot of fluid.

The red tap like thing, first try it at 2:00 p.m angle - mine is probably at 1:00 pm  as it was chucking out too many micro bubbles.

It really is trial and error - just ensure you have loads of lovely white bubbles in the main part (look at my photo) and the skim is fairly dry bubbles (produced in the box at the top)
