I hope the fact that the barbs are munching plants in this tank isn't a bad sign for the main tank :/

Honestly, if they get after the water sprite and anacharis, I really wouldn't mind at this point lol. But yeah, we'll see how things go.

Just an update, I lost one of my black ruby barbs. My wife and I went away for the weekend and when we got back it was dead. One of them was pale and sickly when I got them, so I think it was just that. Tested the parameters and everything was fine...ammonia tested somewhere between 0.25 and 0.5 so I did a water change, and everyone is happy and healthy looking today.

A quick question though, my smallest new cory has some frayed fins...I don't see any spots or anything unusual with him. Should I be worried?? Or just assume he was roughed up a little in shipping??

Also, one of the barbs seems to be swimming down a lot. I'm worried it might have a swim bladder issue?? Best option?? Feed peas??

yes, try pea's, you could also dip it in salt water solution - I use epsom salt for internal stuff as it's helps them pass things through. Don't add it to the tank though, add about half a litre of water to a jug and about a small t-spoon of epsom salt. Mix it well cos that stuff takes some dissolving. Add the fish to the jug and leave it in there for a about 10 minutes then net it back to the tank. You might have to repeat the process for a couple of days .. depends on what's blocking it's guts

As for the cories ... that could be the barbs fin nipping. Keep an eye on things as barbs are notorious for this and I've seen how bad it gets. My Dad's black rubies went for his gold barbs so badly that 4 out of the 5 had no dorsal fins at all - just a hole in their backs where they used to be. This is why I never recommend barbs. I just see them as evil, nasty fish :(

I really hope it's not them fin nipping, if all else fails, I'll add the cories to the main tank early. There are plenty of hiding places amidst all that vegetation. I'll try the Epsom salts! Thanks for the help!

Fish that are unable to remain upright due to swim bladder problems rarely recover.  The cause may be internal injuries, genetic, internal protozoan, chilling... etc.  As far as I am aware, there is no cure for fish that have swim bladder issues.  The peas and epsom salt will not have any affect on swim bladder issues, but will help if constipation is the issue.

Observe the aquarium for a time by sitting motionless, to see if you can discern any aggression, which may be very minimal but still relevant.  My Black Ruby Barbs have never nipped, but they are in a large group (14) and a spacious tank (90g)...and the more in the group and the bigger the tank the less aggression is likely.  I have them in with a group of Congo Tetra with their flowing extended fins but in two years there has never been any nipping or other aggression.  Nor with the five loaches.  Obviously this is not to say it can't happen.  Observe carefully.  Fins can have other issues too.

That tank looks amazing... great job with the planting, it's beautiful.

Hey everyone! Long time, no type! =) Just wanted to do a quick update on the tank. Everything has been going great, I've been slacking a little on water changes, but now I'm back at it with a vengeance!

I headed down to my LFS today to stock up on food, and sponges for my filter just to keep on hand. And, I decided while I was there, that I needed to do a major clean and overhaul on my tank.

It had gotten ridiculously overgrown, my jungle val, water sprite, and frogbit had taken over everything to the point that I didn't know what to do with it all. And, to top it off Akasha was right, and my black ruby barbs ate most of the other plants besides the ones I listed and my swords.

So, I bought a couple more amazon swords, and a huge red melon sword. And during my water change/filter clean tonite, I ripped out all of my water sprite and jungle val, and put in the swords. Also threw out a LOAD of frogbit. So, things look very different now, and once the dust all settles, I'll get a picture up for you all.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Picture update, cloudy water from just getting fed!

Looking good.  I hope the fish issues are solved?

Oh the one that swims crooked? Never did get her figured out, but she still gets around fine. Seems to always swim a little slanted, but has no problems floating or sinking. Doesn't get overly picked on either, so I'm leaving her be.

Some update pictures!

Hope you enjoy! Sorry for the dirty glass, didn't realize it was so bad until I saw the pics =/

wow, looks amazing. Out of interest - the black ruby barb all coloured up is a male. My Dad's male used to go that colour when he was in the mood to breed. He'd start chasing females in and out of the plants for a few hours before returning back to his normal colour. You can sex them by looking at the anal fins. The males fins are completely black and the females are clear - sometimes with a black tip but never completely black like the boys :)
