Snails!

Depends on the snail.. and the tank inhabitants!

Malaysian trumpet snails don't harm plants and turn over the substrate. They're an excellent addition to a tank.

Most other snails will eat your plants, but if you have snail eating fish such as loaches or puffers even those snails will be beneficial by feeding your fish!

And of course some snails will also clean your tank of algae.

I have Ivory Mystery Snails and they do a fantastic job on my algae. I don't have any algae eating fish and almost never need to clean the glass, plants or gravel  They don't get TOO big and haven't reproduced at all, let alone infested my tank. I got them off aquabid and have been very happy with them

I have some snails in my 10 gallon planted, that hitchhiked in there from when plants were purchased. Have no clue what kind a snail they are, but they are reproducing, but they are no eating my plants and I never have to clean algae in that tank.

My 75 gallon which has fake plants, is beginning to have a little algae build up. I use magnets for the glass, but now I am beginning to see some on the plastic plants. I was thinking of moving some snails over before problem gets out of hand.

Water parameters are AMM 0 Nitrite ) Nitrate around 20,2 water changes a week. So I figure there is nothing I can do to combat algae so I figure I would draft some snails from 10 gallon. Tank lights in tank in question doesnot go on to 2 pm off around 11

So should I move some snails?

I figure that I will see what theycan do with my blossoming algae and then I can take some out when the population get too large.

I have just move 7 snails to my 75 gallon, I want to see what kind of job they can do. How long til you think I will see a difference? :dunno:

I don't think I would add the snails to your 75g unless you plan on adding loaches in the future.

What kind of algae are you getting? :dunno:

Brown algae on the plasitc plants and green on rocks, like I said it is not that bad just been noticed it last couple of weeks.

I use magnet for glass......

I was just reading some posts on ottos, i think I will check some out this week. How many do you recommend for 75 gallon

IMO otoos are almost pointless, they never seem to do much. My bnose pleco can, and will, clean a section of glass 2"x 2" in like a minute.

I also have some snails that hitch-hiked in with live plants, don't know latin name for them, but most people know what you mean if you say they are pond snails. I have live plants in nearly all of my tanks, so the snails have spread with the plants and are in most of my tanks too. I don't think it is that big of a deal. The snails scavenge for food scraps; if you don't overfeed, there won't be an abundant food supply, and they won't breed as fast. However, you will eventually get a good supply of them, and whenever this happens all I do is crush a few. There are very few fish that won't appreciate a fresh escargot snack now and then.

It's supposed to get to be 4-6". I was kinda lucky and got one almost full grown, about 4". It is amazing to watch, he just leaves a path of cleanliness : )
