I just got four snails today. Are they supposed to be fed something or do they just eat the the algea. And I heard that snails can breed pretty fast, is that true.

Hi,

What kind of snails did you buy? they will eat fish food, algae and mine love cucumber, blanched cabbage and broccoli. The breeding depends what type they are some snails will over run the tank, others lay eggs above water that can be removed. There are pictures in the pinned topic in the snail section so you can get an id.

Emma :)

It is funny to watch snails breed on top of the water, they are like WALKING ON WATER, but in the water... do you know what I am saying? oh the heck with it, here

SEEEEEE :p

Im not sure but i think their either Apple snail or great ramshorn snail or just regular ramshorns.

I heard that snails eat the leaves of live plants is that true or do only some do that?

No, I don't think so. I think its the bigger ones that do that, like the Apple snails. And I think it's the dead leaves they eat.

First of all, there are lots of snails that eat plants, so do some don't. Snails, well their eggs can hatch in about month or so, sometimes, depending on the species, longer.

Snails are hermaphrodite's, right. So does that mean you can just randomly pick two snails, put them in a tank, and they would or might breed.

Snails eat algae but as Emma said they need supplements incase you are lucky enough to have not much algae. :p You can use sinking catfish pellets. Yes, under the right conditions snails can and do breed and can quickly fill a tank with um... baby snails? (What are baby snails called :?)

Some species eat live plants.

Well if they will eat leafy things, then would they eat lettuce. If so, would it be safe to take some lettuce from a McDonalds cheeseburger and wash it off really good, free of any (mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard ect.) and then feed it to them.

I hope you realise that they will lay eggs everywere and u might get a sudden burst of snails. I did this once and 4 weeks later there was about 100 snails from just two that i originaly had. I think it takes only a couple of days for the eggs to hatch, thats from my experience. I thinkl it's good that you're experementing and trying something new. Goodluck
