The other day I put four little snails (about the size of a pinky nail, don't know what they're called, came in with my plants) in my five-gallon fry tank. Then a day later I put them back in the sixty-gallon community tank cos they were producing too much waste. Earlier this morning I siphoned the waste and raised the water level. Then I put back the snails. About thirty minutes ago, I took the snails out again. By the way, my fry are one week old. Now, onto the question. Seeing as how missing fry ventrals have been often related to the presence of snails in the fry tank, could my snails' brief stay in my fry tank possibly cause any missing ventrals?

They produce a fair amount of waste, so maybe they are in a sense contributing to the ventral-less-ness of your fry, buy causing ammonia buildup and therefore the dissolving of the ventrals. They don't serve much of a purpose in a fry tank, they won't eat the left over food because food for fry is too small for any snail.

I'd remove them, maybe put them in a bigger tank of set one up for them - they're very interesting to watch.

What colour are they? What do they look like?

I am trying to get snails out of my bettas tanks...putting  them in a jam jar....they really move fast. put a flake of fish food in this morning about an hour later they were all upside down on the water line..if you get my meaning.

Hm.. Good point.

Yeah, they're in my sixty-gallon community tank. Started out as three stow-away snails from some plants I bought. And now there are.. I dunno, maybe around twenty of them. Hehe. Cute little critters. :D

Caramel, darkening as they grow older. Could you give me a link to different types of snails? I really have to id them. I think they're apple snails, though. I'm gonna get some trumpet snails tomorrow. There are some in my backyard. :hey:

I put about 4 physa acuta snails in my fry tank and now I have about 60 in there -_- Trying to get rid of those pesky kritters! They're not cute at all like my trumpet snails.

Anyways, my babies are about 15 weeks old now, and I haven't had any problems with missing ventrals.
