it has been 1 week my tank has been sitting with the LR, i have droped plenty of flake food all week long and now the flakes i noticed are decomposing in the tank. My readings are still the same. what do i do now? is a 7.8PH okay? should i syphon the sand and get rid of the flakes, which will do a water chang?

i tried to syphon the sand yesterday to remove the flakes, some reason it wouldn't pick it up. what i'm i suppose to use?? it only picks up dust like particles within the sand the flakes remained.

it's a skill a lot of us never manage - to syphon sand!

Just leave it alone for now and don't add anymore flakes :good:

You have to hoover the syphon right above what you're trying to pick up. Pretty close to the sand, yet right above ti. Inevitably, you'll always get some darned sand....at least I do even after about a year of practice

AND

Patience is a virtue in this hobby. Practice now when no lives are at stake that way it'll be easier to have it down the road when you may REALLY need it.

you can try siphoning into a mug or pail. after that rinse of the unwanted stuff, and inevitably a little sand, and you can pour the sand back in :good:

i thought perhaps i got the wrong syphon, but not. i have been sick the last 3 days. i need to test my water again. i will update.

Did you test the water before or after the water change?

Looks like the cycle is moving along, probably wont take much longer.

i tested before the water change. i will test again it has been about 6hrs since the change.

what do i do?

Wait until the nitrite is at zero. Then do another large water change to knock the nitrate down and start slowly adding your CUC.

okay, so i shouldn't change the water yet, let it go untill it's at 0 then change :)

Yep, if you have no livestock then let it run its course then do a large water change to knock the nitrates down.
