Hello
I'm after a small algae eating fish for my community tank. 65L, so something quite small to share with a few neon and garnet tetras and a pair of dwarf gouramis. Any suggestions - preferably something that can be kept singularly (or pair at most)
thanks
Shaun

I have got a couple of golden oto's. They are very good algae eaters and one on its own will be fine and they are very peaceful for a community aquarium

well ive never heard of a golden oto before because i am pretty dure there is only two species of them the normal otocinclus and the zebra otocinclus maybe your thinking of a golden SAE but otos are lovely timid fish and eat algae very good. :hey:

Golden oto sounds an awful lot like a golden CAE, which get pretty nasty with age... might want to get a better ID on that fish.

Otos are lovely little algae eating fish, though you'll probably want at least three and they like mature stable tanks. Algae shrimp are wonderful little things, though they'll probably be eaten by the gouramis in your tank. You may be able to get away with one of the smaller plecos like the clown pleco, though they'll also munch on any plants that you have in the tank and many prefer another diet.

If you just want to get rid of algae, adding an algae eater to your tank isn't really the best solution. Fast growing live plants and shortened lighting periods work much better at controlling algae. If it's algae on the glass you're worried about, scrubbing with a sponge is the best solution.

They are excellent little scavengers, I have one myself. The only trouble you might have is that many fish will see them as delicious treats and I'm worried about your gouramis. Another thing to watch out for is shrimp being sucked up by the filter intake. You can try them, but they may end up as a very expensive snack for your current fish.
